How does DoK differ from Bloom's Taxonomy?

Bloom's taxonomy centers around classification of tasks that students are supposed to engage in. While DOK can focus on the task, as we saw from yesterday's discussion, the DOK level can depend heavily on what is actually done with the task. DOK focuses on cognitive demands (thinking processes); not just the what and the how but also considering the level of thinking that students must engage in, in order to complete the task.

With all of us having a different idea on the levels of tasks, how are we going to be able to norm our expectations of each other?

The DOK tool is just a way for us to start thinking about our tasks, instead of being so monotonous with our activities. We want to make sure that our tasks are rigorous and engaging and to be able to have conversations about the rigor.

At Calvin Rodwell, the DOK tool is not intended to be punitive. It is intended to give us the vocabulary to start talking about why a standard or task is rigorous or not and how we can scaffold or enrich a task so that it engages students in the thinking necessary to attend to the CCSS.
