The term Ancient, or Archaic, Greece refers to the time three centuries before the classical age, between 800 B.C. and 500 B.C.—a relatively sophisticated period in world history. Archaic Greece saw advances in art, poetry and technology, but most of all it was the age in which the polis, or city-state, was invented. The polis became the defining feature of Greek political life for hundreds of years.

They had boats that were 115 ft long and they had sails and they were pushed along by the wind . A trimes was a boat and it needed 170 men to power it and row and it was one man to each oar. They prayed to the god Poseidon and to have a safe journey. Travel by sea was the preferred method of transportation because it was easier than travel by land and was much less expensive. In ancient Greece, wagons, carriages and carts all were in use, whether for purposes of carrying people or goods.

Shoes are far more ancient than ncient Greece, with the first footwear dating as far back as 40,000 years ago. While versatile and stylish options began to appear in the late Middle Ages, the shoes of ancient Greece were largely utilitarian. In fact, the stereotypical image of ancient Greek citizens wearing simple sandals is actually not far from the truth. However, there's more to the story -- some ancient Greeks actually sported boot-like footwear, and their sandals even have a link to classical mythology.

No systematic collection of Greek laws has come down to us. Our knowledge of some of the earliest notions of the subject is derived from the Homeric poems. For the details of Attic law we have to depend on ex parte statements in the speeches of the Attic orators, and we are sometimes able to check those statements by the trustworthy, but often imperfect, aid of inscriptions. Incidental illustrations of the laws of Athens may be found in the Laws of Plato, who deals with the theory of the subject without exercising any influence on actual practice. The Laws of Plato are criticized in the Politics of Aristotle, who, besides discussing laws in their relation to constitutions, reviews the work of certain early Greek lawgivers. The treatise on the Constitution of Athens includes an account of the jurisdiction of the various public officials and of the machinery of the law courts, and thus enables us to dispense with the second-hand testimony of grammarians and scholiasts who derived their information from that treatise (see Constitution of Athens). The works of Theophrastus On the Laws, which included a recapitulation of the laws of various barbaric as well as Grecian states, are now represented by only a few fragments (Nos. 97-106, ed. Winner).

Babies born in Ancient Greece often had a difficult time surviving. Many died in the first couple days of life; therefore, babies did not receive names until the seventh or tenth day of life. If a baby was born deformed, it might have been abandoned on a mountain (female babies were abandoned more often than males). Sometimes abandoned babies were rescued and brought up as slaves by another family. In Sparta, seven-year-old boys were taken to the barracks by the city and raised. They were trained in the military and were not allowed to leave the barracks until age thirty. Many similar to current day toys, have been found in archeological sites. Dolls, rattles, tops, swings, and many other items have been unearthed. As is common today, those from richer families had a greater assortment of toys, while those from poorer families were expected to work for the family at a much younger age. Evidence also shows that Greeks kept pets such as dogs, pigs, tortoises, and caged birds.Girls reached puberty ages at twelve and thirteen at which point they were considered adults and could marry. Girls took their childhood toys and left them at the temple of Artemis. This signaled that their childhood was over and that they were becoming adults. After marrying, the women were expected to have a baby. Not being able to bear children was seen as curse from the gods.

In the preceding centuries, the dominant geopolitical unit was the polis or city-state.He was the son of King Philip of Macedonia. He was a Greek warrior, and soon he became the great conqueror. He is the first and the only king who was referred to as great. In Greece, people worshipped Alexander the Great, and considered him equivalent to god when he ruled.Like every Macedonian ruler, Alexander was very fond of drinking. His drinking habits knew no limits and some historians think that is what took his life.
