Acculturation experienced by Vietnamese-Americans or Vietnamese-immigrants can lead to challenges such as loss of identity and a struggle to fit in. While parents aim to provide the best for their children and deeply value the sacrifices they have made for their future, this can create invisible pressure on subsequent generations, resulting in intergenerational conflict. However, encouraging the discuss among these conflicts and expectation can offer opportunities for growth, understanding, and stronger family bons as families navigates these complex dynamics together.

Different generations perceive mental health and wellbeing through unique lenses. For many Gen Y (Millennials) and earlier generations, mental health was not a central focus. However, an often overlooked aspect of Gen Z's approach to mental health highlighted by Zay (2021):

We are the generation of financially motivated, which we measure success by salary and economic stability

We are the youngest generation with the highest rate of attending university

Despite our pursuit of higher education, we strive to avoid accumulating debt. This juggling adds to our stress and anxiety.

Recently, Covid 19 Pandemic has profoundly reshaped our educational experience and "normal" socialization!

As a GenZ individual born in 2002, I have a personal connection to this subject.

I am always fascinated about by the changes that occur within my generation, particularly the rapid development and integration of technology. However, there is a concerning global trend that highlights GenZ as having the poorest mental health among other generations (Zay, 2021).

This inspired me to delve deeper into understanding mental health challenges faced by our generations. My clinical placement in Child and Adolescents Psychiatric Unit (CAPU) at PRHC, where I encountered many Gen Z patients, has further fueled my interest in this topic.

Culture is an integral aspect of nursing. With diverse perspectives on mental health across generations, the influence of cultural background and ethnicity has fueled my interest. Understanding the cultural nuances, particularly how mental health has not been the major focus among the Vietnamese-Americans and many immigrants, helps healthcare providers identify and upgrade their approach to mental health and wellbeing. By tailoring care to specific populations, we can ensure more comprehensive and accessible care for various populations.

Nursing is a dynamic profession that demands continuous learning and adaptation. During my clinical placement in mental health and maternal-child settings, I frequently reflect on the principles of "ways of knowing" and relational inquiry. Integrating these concepts into clinical environment enables me to adopt a comprehensive and proactive approach to patient care. Additionally, it facilitates ongoing self-evaluation, which is crucial for my personal and professional development as a future nurse.

I chose this quote to be an artifact as a reminder for myself to be devoted, accountable, and compassionate in my care. As a future nurse, it is essential to possess empirical knowledge to support my patients effectively. However, it is the ethical knowing, guided by the Code of Ethics, that ensures I provide safe and empathetic care. This approach promotes patient wellbeing through a person-centered approach rather than biomedical approach that focuses solely on the medical condition.

This highlights the significant role of family and support systems in understanding and addressing mental health issue. Even when these issues are not visibly apparent like physical health, it is deeply impactful. This illustration emphasizes the necessity of family to be present and supportive, which aligns with the principles of family-centered care. In combination with person-centered care, this maximizes patient outcomes in mental health practice by involving both parties in the care process.

However, with long working hours with high mentality and emotional toll, healthcare providers experience burned out and compassionate fatigue eventually .

This is why I chose to explore the topic of self-compassionate means. This would allows nurses to recognize our own struggles, taking steps to take care of our own mental health, and foster self-resilience against emotional exhaustion, such as compassionate fatigue.

Personally, I interpret self-care as engaging in enjoyable activities that bring us happiness, such as skin care, treating ourselves with cheat meals, or maybe just a bouquet of flowers that bring us joy.

On the other hand, I interpret self-compassion to involve a deeper level of emotional care. It means taking time to encourage and speak positively to ourselves, allowing for self-reflection on our emotions. This process helps us us finding solutions to our challenges, and foster self-resilience. Self-compassion act as a powerful emotional recharge, supporting our overall well-being as nurses in a more profound way.

Compassion fatigue occurs when healthcare providers experience emotion exhaustion from being continuously present and supportive for others, leading to secondary trauma and negative effects on their mental health (Canadian Medical Association, 2022). This state of burnout would diminish one's ability to provide effective patient care.

This quote serves as a powerful reminder for healthcare providers to prioritize our own mental health. Before we can effectively care for others, one must first ensure their own wellbeing. Just a cup needs to be filled before it can be used to pour into others!
