So first should be an explanation of what we are learning, then learning it, then an activity or game to apply what has been learned.

Learning through playing games is also quite effective. Relating parts of the lesson to common everyday events is also another component of an effective lesson. For example, interactive games such as kahoot always receive great responses (a couple other multiple choice suggestions could be quizlet live or gimkit) from students as they're fun to play while also relevant to what a teacher is trying to teach. Moreover, a lesson that obviously is still aligned with the syllabus but also engaging (without long lectures) typically satisfies me.
