Today I learned a lot about the slavery at the museum. I knew it was there, but now I know how it went and how awful it was. That slaves were put on a island and get fed to look better. So they make more money.

I liked to contact with the local people at the scavenger hunt at the market in the city Point-a-Pitre. I learned about the spices, the jewelry and how to say my name is in Creole.

Today we went to Pointe-à-Pitre. A day with different faces. The slave museum has a good record of the past of Guadeloupe (and the rest of the world). Furthermore, the people on Guadeloupe are very friendly. People say hello to each other and want to start a conversation. You don't see this everywhere, not even in the Netherlands.

Today I got yet again confronted with a part of the Dutch heritage I’m not proud of. Slavery is a big topic in the Netherlands. That’s because we have a big Caribbean and Suriname community in the Netherlands. What I learned today is the following. I didn’t knew that there were islands where the slave traders let the enslaved revitalise so they looked much healthier and were “worth” more money. It’s absolutely absurd and horrible that people were treated this way.

Sjoerd

What I learned today: That Pointe-à-Pitre is not the capital of Guadeloupe. That there is a very large polluting industry on the island and that France does not give priority to solving it for political and economic reasons. That the people of Guadeloupe are very proud of their island and culture, but still want to stay with France.

😒Today is a hard day for me. I have I faced a topic very far from me - slavery! it hurts my feelings...and how hard it is to realize that people suffered so much and simply were loosing their identity due to the evil will of other people. it is very very accessible presented in the museum. The most shameful page in the history of mankind!
Now I'm listening to Bob Marley songs 💔 and I will be listening the whole evening...

I was really sad and the museum touched my heart deepy. Slavery is a BIG topic at schools in Germany even though Germany did not have colonies in the Caribeean Sea.
I felt guilty that such cruel things were happening and if I were a white French, born and raised on Guadeloupe I would feel ashamed and guilty and would try to do the very best to make people feel happy.
It was difficult for me to do business as usual after the museum a nd I wished we all could have reflected on it togehter right away.

Today I heard the most important part of guadalope's history. Slavery is a terrible but important part of it. I think it's good to see that people continue to talk about this with the aim that it is not forgotten.

I have also seen different aspects of the culture in the market. Also I have seen and held traditional clothes. I got some nice experiences after today.

The marked with all the spices was beautiful and I had a nice chat with an old lady in German. And I learned the French word for honey: miel.

"Multiculturalism is the phenomeman of multiple groups of cultures excisting within one society, largely due the arrival of immigrant communities, or the acceptance and advocation of the phenomenon" - Quote Booklet

Multiculturalism we saw in the streets of Point-A-Pitre today. In music, clothing, handcraft, language, jewelery spices and the people. The assigment let us interact to experience the culture. I learned that all the cultures combined makes the culture of the island, a colourful place to be. Something to tell in class at home.
