Billie Jo was born in August of 1920 to a family of crop farmers. They wanted a boy but got a long legged girl, familiar faced to her dad. When she got older her friend Livie had made her farewells and moved west. She missed Livie but she had her mothers piano to keep company. Billie Jo would listen to her mother play the keys and was inspired to play as well. She started by playing for the school music teacher, then for the Palace Theater.

Billie Jo always sets up the table for dinner while her mother cooks. At dinner she hears from her parents that her friend Livie's family can't find work or food. Ma is worried the same might happen to them with the baby growing in her. The crops her father watches over don't last long due to the dust. The dust presents most of the problems in the Panhandle
