Carolina Maria de Jesus was born in 1914, in Minas Gerais. Her parents were formerly enslaved, and she was the first person in her family to go to school. As an adult, she lived in a favela in São Paulo, and dreamed of being a writer. She was very poor, and collected scraps on the streets to survive and feed her three children. BUT, she was a very intelligent woman who was able to write about her own life critically, analysing the governments and how they treated their citizens. She became a best-seller and it changed her life.
