1. Back ground reading, viewing resources and discussions as a class will help you understand;
  • What you already know about a topic or theme
  • What you do not know and need to know in order to take a position on a topic or theme.
2. Take a position on on a topic: this will be your hypothesis 

3. Create Focus Questions that you can use to investigate your hypothesis. By answering these questions you can form a conclusion(s) about your hypothesis.

Some examples for you to look at:
  • New Zealands' high crime rates can be linked to social issues like poverty, poor housing and unemployment.
  • The pollution of our water ways; rivers and streams is the result of intensified agriculture and horticulture.
  • The litter problem at THS shows most students do not care about their environment.
Each of these hypothesis can be broken down into two or three focus questions that you can use to prove or disprove your hypothesis
