I am sending home a summer reading list with series suggestions and links to the public library. I am also including this blurb in our final newsletter.

Dear Parents and Students,

Summer reading is one of the easiest ways to ensure your success in the 2014-15 school year. Students should be reading for pleasure every day to help maintain all the growth they made this year and get ready for success in the fall. We are so lucky that we can offer our students many reading formats from tradtional books, to graphic novels to audio books and eBooks. Please be on the lookout for a summer reading list to be coming home near the end of the year. Collins is centered between 3 great Houston Public Libraries. This is a great and free summer activity you can do with children. The public library offers many great programs for students and families.

Families with tablets, computers and internet access can also use the Collins webpage to access our school’s eBooks and electronic resources. Last but no least each student has a MyOn reader account that they can use to access their personal MyOn eBooks account. Just go to www.myon.com, identify our school, type in the student’s lunch number and our school password: read. I recommend accessing these resources before the end of the school year so that you can contact our library if you need help with anything. Have a great summer and Read, Read, Read!

I am sending home a list of summer reading titles that go in conjuction with

the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. We kicked it off May 5th

with students in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. The challenge ends September 5th!

Top 3 readers will be rewarded with Kindle Fire (1st place), $50 GC to

Barnes & Noble (2nd place) and Gift basket of books and goodies of Scholastic

Books (3rd Place). Minutes will need to be logged in by August 29th to qualify! Students are

excited and are claiming THEY will be the top reader!

I'm also sending a seperate summer reading list for PreK, K and 1st grade students,

as well as a letter from me that outlines great reasons for reading this summer!

A presentation was shared with parents at a Parent Center meeting regarding avoiding the summer slide. Resources have been added to the Alexander page (Alexander Home Page --> Parent Resources --> Summer Resources) to provide additional information.

Information includes recommended reading lists from ALA, recommended IOS and Android apps from TCEA, recommended websites from ALA, as well as community summer reading programs (HPL, Barnes and Noble, Half Price Books). Additionally, representatives from the Houston Public Library were present at the Parent Center meeting.

Parents were encourged to prepare their students for the upcoming year by learning about Social Studies and Science topics in advance using the resources on our Alexander Library Student Resources page (Pebble Go, Capstone, etc.)

Reminders of these resources will be tweeted on the Alexander Twitter page that is embedded on the school home page during the summer as well.

I am sending home a pamphlet with books suggestion

s for each grade level to read over the summer.

I am also sending home a flyer that has all of our databases and passwords.

I have been using our library's website to show them where they

can find educational games and electronic books to play during the summer.

Additionally, I am currently using book swap to get students to bring in old

books they have already read and swap them with new books they can

keep and read over the summer.

The Houston Public Library is coming to talk to the students about the summer reading program next week.

I will also send home a summer reading list and with a short take on the importance of summer reading. I will also send home the database information along with the passwords.

I am giving away over 500 books May 19-21 to students who have checked out over 10 or more books this year and students who have been selected by their English teachers.

Students are being encouraged continue their reading by visiting the public library

over the summer, following and conversing with HNGCLibrary on Twitter and Goodreads.

I am sending home a reading list to promote next year's Fall campus BOB titles. In the fall, we'll have campus BOB using the summer reading titles. This promotes student choice and gives a purpose for reading while at the same time giving students guidance. We're hoping the teachers will help us promote reading over the summer to 5th grade. On the list are 10 new & classic titles for the kids to read, information about the Scholastic Summer program, and we'll also pass out flyers from Half Price Books for their summer reading program.

The Textperts Committee and the Library will provide over 6,000 books for our students. This program is called Think Through Summer and will take place May 27-29th. Each student will visit the gym and select two books of his/her choice for summer reading.

We are having a book drive so that every student will be able to choose 1 - 2 books to take home for the summer. They will also receive a recommended reading list and the passwords for our databases and e-books.

A librarian from Houston Public Library will visit Liestman 4 times. During each 1.5-hour session, she will do storytelling and will talk to the students about the importance of READING during the summer break. She will also talk about the programs that the Henington Branch offers during summer, and we will hand out HPL summer calendar. In each session, she will address a whole grade level in the gym during PLC time.

Also:

* I'm sending home a summer reading list (Thanks to Amy Owens), and a Barnes & Noble flyer about their Summer Reading "Imagination's Destination" that encourages kids to read books and earn a FREE book.

* The newsletter going home will list our Databases' usernames and passwords, so students can use them during the summer break.

Students will be sent home with a reading book list from Scholastic Summer Reading Program. If 5th graders read 5 books, 10 books, 15 books or more they will receive prizes in August. They will receive bonus prizes if the participate in HPL summer reading program. Students will need to show their HPL summer reading badge and/or a reading log signed by their parent/guardian.
