I have been given a calendar of what the summer is supposed to be like and following it as closely as possible. I come in and am usually given a task of the day or simply continuing tasks I have begun from the previous days. The team and I have daily check in meetings, seeing what updates each of us have, asking questions they might have or bring solutions of past problems. Overall, it has been interesting to see how each section of a company comes together to let the theatre company shine.

I am navigating my internship by versing myself in all of the projects that Newark Arts Council will be hosting this fall for the Newark Arts Fair. By being in close communication with the curatorial assistant, I am allowed to be more hands on on organizing projects, meeting with artists, promotion as well as curating for the festival’s visual arts segment. We have weekly meetings with other branches of the council like marketing and finance and connect with each other depending on tasks that are needed to complete each week.

Navigating my internship this summer involves a combination of careful organization, continuous learning, and active communication. I'm responsible for organizing Alex Jay's donated collection, identifying discrepancies, creating item descriptions, and using preservation methods like acid-free paper and mylar folders. I toured the Museum of Chinese in America and collaborated on the Qipao collection by writing descriptions and detailing measurements. I work in the Curatorial department of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum where all of the work is independently lead. I have been navigating being given instructions/demos of tasks that I have to do and completing them to my best ability. I have been working on preserving newspaper and after the first demo I was expected to complete the entire box of newspapers (that we collected in-situ) by the end of the week; which I managed to do. Now my supervisors passed me along the next task in the process of cataloguing these artifacts but I will again not be supervised.

I have been given the task of creating a family tour at the ICA in Boston, and in this process I’ve been enjoying being able to shadow both adult tours through the galleries as well as the younger school group tours. Being able to talk to my coworkers who are also gallery teachers and getting tips on how their structure their tours has helped me a lot. It’s a very collaborative environment and I enjoy seeing how different types of people engage with the same pieces of artwork. -Ana

As my primary tasks have been reaching out to other arts institutions and scheduling trips via email, I have been taking cues from my supervisor and other coworkers with seniority on professional communication norms. My end-of-summer deliverable is an online gallery of the teens' artwork with a narrative throughline, and I've been working towards that by brainstorming theme ideas and studying other online galleries for examples of artist's statements and other relevant language.
