Hi, my name is Jasmine Downs, I’m 16, and I’ve been at COHEA for two years. Some of my hobbies are dancing and, honestly, sleeping. I love being creative, trying new Starbucks drinks, and of course, going to Disney whenever I can. My favorite movies are Aladdin, Tangled, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and my favorite show is The Vampire Diaries. My music taste is all over the place, but I’m really into Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Drake, and Aventura. For fun, I like vlogging with my family and friends, hanging out at Disney, even just for a day, and spending time with my family because I’m super family-oriented. I also love late-night drives with the windows down and the music blasting. When it comes to food, I’m obsessed with Nicaragüense food, Oreo cookies, and my pink drinks from Starbucks. My favorite restaurant in Miami is Rishtedar, because I went there for my 16th birthday, and the food, the atmosphere, and the whole vibe made it special. And if you ever want a cool place to check out in Miami, I’d say Brickell—because the lights are amazing, the vibe is so lively, and of course, there’s great shopping.

In the future, I see myself becoming a mom, because I already feel like I have strong motherly instincts from helping take care of my 1-year-old sister. I also want to travel, buy my dream car as a “big girl” purchase, own my own home, and build a beautiful family with an amazing husband. Career-wise, I’m interested in becoming either a psychologist or a criminological psychologist. My dream school is the University of Miami, since I grew up loving not only the school but also the sports—I’ve gone to the games every fall, and the school has always been a big part of my life. At the same time, I’d like to keep my opportunities open, so I’d also consider Penn State, NYU, LSU, Boston University, or the University of South Florida. Ultimately, my dream job is to become a psychologist so I can better understand why people do what they do and find ways to help make things better.

I’m proud of how much I’ve grown socially, because I used to be very anti-social and kept to myself, but I’ve been pushing myself to open up more—and if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met my best friends. Another thing I’m proud of is all the certificates I earned last year. Before coming to COHEA, I didn’t care much about school or grades, but this school motivated me to do better. Because of that, I made the honor roll and even earned an award in Anatomy. Looking forward, one of my biggest goals is to be the first in my family to graduate from college and eventually earn my PhD in psychology. I think my strengths are that I’m very caring, I give good advice, and I’ve been emotionally mature from a young age, which helps me understand people better. At the same time, I know I have weaknesses, like building walls and not letting people in because of past experiences, getting overstimulated or too angry at times, and being overly independent when sometimes it’s okay to ask for help. In Addition, I believe it’s important to always keep improving because there’s always room to grow, and mistakes are really just lessons to learn from.

A moment when I truly felt on top of the world was my quinceañera. I’ll never forget that day—it was full of laughter, memories, and even some funny inside jokes, like my friends teasing me about it landing on 4/20. It was such a special night, and it’s a memory I would love to relive. Another exhilarating experience for me has been going to concerts. I love everything about them—the chance to dress up, take pictures, and sing my heart out surrounded by so much energy. My favorite concerts so far have been Drake and The Weeknd, and those moments are ones I’ll always hold onto.

An embarrassing moment that happened to me was at a “friendmas,” when we were all laughing so hard that one of my friends peed herself a little. I was laughing so much that I tripped and fell, which made everyone laugh even harder. At the moment, I was super embarrassed, but looking back, it’s one of those memories that still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

My favorite assignment from last year would have to be any project from my Anatomy class, because I enjoyed the subject, and Ms. Cruz made the class even better. Looking ahead, I’d like assignments that challenge me to think in new ways and help push me to become a stronger writer. I want to be able to grow creatively while also learning and improving academically at the same time.
