Planning and Creative Ideas

Reflecting on the learning journey involved in planning and constructive a building with blocks brings to light several valuable insights that translate well into art education. I developed spatial awareness and learned to see shapes and lines in 3 dimensions, which translate directly into art concept like composition, balance and proportion. This experience reminded me of the creative process in art, where not every attempt yields the desired results, and revision is a key part of developing stronger work.

This experience has deepened my appreciation for building processes and provide me with a concrete way to teach abstract art concepts. Integrating block-building into art lessons can foster creativity, resilience and spatial awareness in a way that is engaging and accessible for students of all ages

Headers Matter

Things, ideas and key messages can get lost in translation, especially if it is too heavy.

But if everyone in the team can grasp the key ideas (i.e. the short, succint headers in bold) of the big picture objectives, for example department goals and vision, they are able to remember it better and make meaning of it for themselves in their own areas of work also.

Lesson Learnt:

Important to provide CLEAR direction and vision for the team so that we can move together
Provide key ideas for clarity and purpose
Give enough information to help everyone understand the 5Ws 1H in dept strategic planning - "What is the focus?
"Where are we going?" (Direction)
"Why are we doing it?" (Purpose)
"Who are involved?" (Role)
"How will we get there?" (Process)

Same Same But Different

Although everyone was given the same resources, different groups interpreted it differently, contributed a range of ideas and utilised the tools given in a variety of ways.

Similarly, when it comes to T&L, teachers may be provided the same resources, but how they use and interpret it (i.e. content knowledge), and how it is carried out (pedagogical skills) varies from one to the other - and experience, prior knowledge and circumstances etc. plays a part in how these resources and used to engage students in a classroom.

Lessons learnt:

We cannot assume that all teachers begin at the same starting point
While resources may be good, teacher competency is also impt in the planning and execution stage
It may be "long-winded" but it may be necessary to walk teachers through the platter of resources available and share ideas (e.g. like when we had the "gallery walk") to learn from one another and glean new ideas/perspectives
