As a way to avoid a civil war Octavius would negotiate with the senate to allow him, Antony and Lepidus to rule Rome together for 5 years. 3 years in tensions started building so they split up the land to cool tensions. Octavian received Europe, Antony the East like modern day Israel, and Lepidus the African provinces. Things would stay relatively calm until after they renewed the agreement but it was still in shambles. Lepidus was weak and losing power, Antony and Octavius thought they were gonna betray each other and they became rivals. Antony would marry Cleopatra of Egypt with the intent to rule both Egypt and his portion of Rome. This was vied not only as an insult to Rome but Octavius as well Antony married Octavius’s sister. In 31 BCE a Octavian defeated Antony in great sea battle which lead to Cleopatra and Antony committing suicide which made Octavian the sole ruler of Rome and put Rome in a state of peace.
