"At an early age I learned that people make mistakes, and you have to decide if their mistakes are bigger than your love for them." (Pg. 264)

Hailey hasn't really been a true friend to Starr ever since Khalil was murdered. She' also very culturally and racially insensitive. Or, maybe she's just a racially prejudiced person. Either way, she doesn't respect Starr's feelings. She also loves to be the only person in charge and "makes" Starr and Hailey follow her. Starr's mom said the line (mentioned above) to Starr, explaining to her that Starr must decide whether or not to keep Hailey in her life. Starr's mom indirectly prompts Starr if Hailey really means something to her. (If Hailey isn't worth it, then Starr should "drop" her.)

#personaljudgement #forgiveness

"Funny how it works with white kids though. It's dope to be black until its hard to be black." (pg 11)

Starr, going to Williamson is part of a minority. Being around white kids, its hard for her to be truly black. She must hold her tongue so people don't think of her as a "angry black girl", and she cant use slang because people will think of her as that girl from the "hood". She feels greatly affected by pressures of her classmates. She doesn't feel she can really embrace who she is, her roots, she has to change to fit in, or not stand out as much. Sometimes people feel they cant truly be themselves to be fully accepted.
#adaptandchage
#socialpressure #ideditymasks

“Even if he was, I knew that boy. Watched him grow up with you. He was more than any bad decision he made,” he says. “I hate that I let myself fall into that mind-set of trying to rationalize his death. And at the end of the day, you don’t [shoot] someone for opening a car door. If you do, you shouldn’t be a cop.” - Uncle Carlos. Thomas, Angie. The Hate U Give (p. 256).

I thought that this was a significant quote at this point in the story because it allows the reader to see deeper into the relationship between Starr and Uncle Carlos. It is also a significant quote because Uncle Carlos is rescinding the comments he made earlier in the novel about Khalil, while also admitting that he was wrong. Admitting one's wrongs is a tough thing to do, and I thought it was a great moment of reconnection in the story.
#reconnection
