Math anxiety starts at an early age. It is related to social situations and brain processes such as working memory. Researchers are beginning to test possible interventions to help people with math anxiety. Having conversations about math anxiety is the first step to helping to conquer math anxieties.

The introduction gives a brief description of what math anxiety is. That it is based on a stress response or having anxiety when being asked to do something or a answer a question involving mathematics. However it is not just being nervous, it can also lead to actual physical symptoms.

Some children as young as 6 years old say that they feel anxious about math. Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly how math anxiety develops, but there are quite a few ideas floating around. (struggled with numbers when young, social situations that influence feelings, teachers level of math anxiety)

Students with high math anxiety are showing more brain activity in their amygdala rather than the part of the brain that using working memory. Having full use of the working memory portion of the brain, prefrontal cortex helps students have success solving math.

Anxiety causes physical symptoms like a racing heart or sweating. People with anxiety believe that they are bad at math and do not like it. Children with math anxiety often have poor math skills. Adults with math anxiety face challenges in their careers and everyday life. It is important to understand when and how math anxiety first appears, what occurs in the brain when people feel anxious about math, and how to help people with it.

Researchers are studying when and how math anxiety first appears. They have found that children in 1st and 2nd grade have reported math anxiety before a test. They also discovered that teachers with math anxiety have students with poorer math achievement during the year. They still do not know if math anxiety or math ability comes first.

To help combat math anxities scientists have tested two interventions. The first one is to write down thoughts and worries about math prior to testing/lessons. They believe that this frees up space for their working memory. The other intervention was to practice breathing techniques prior to testing/lessons. Both showed better score outcomes for the students when completed.
