They hear slurs including "slut," "prude," or worse, and this occurs when women are typically alone or with other females. Moreover, it can happen in any state of vulnerability such as walking passed men on the sidewalk, or at a bar, or at the grocery store, etc. Women feel sexualized by their gender, clothes, appearance, etc. This form of abuse is verbal and is harassment towards the beauty and respect of women. This type of behavior is considered toxic masculinity. Which in Module 5 Virtual Lecture it states, "For example, in response to toxic masculinity, some men choose sexual violence against women as a means of attaining “real manhood” by attempting to prove their dominance and disprove their homosexuality. This is not to say that perpetrators are not responsible for their choices; it’s to say that rape cultures, by promoting toxic masculinity, incentivize the wrong choices," (Module 5 Virtual Lecture, 9). Therefore, explaining in a different case, yet it reminds the reader that cat-calling is just another form of toxic masculinity in the form that women are sexual images only and that men are superior in a sense. In contrast, the perpetrator could be using that tactic as a way to hide their own inner sexuality or personal issues or beliefs.
