Sport is something that Charlie would prefer to avoid.
His love of reading is derived from his father, who shares his book collection with Charlie. His mother is described as nearly broken, after the loss of her unborn daughter.
Jeffery is Charlie's best friend, who is treated atrociously by the other boys, for his Vietnamese heritage.
