Cyclone Yasi occurred simply because all the weather factors to make a cyclone were right; warm, tropical seas and cumulonimbus clouds As Cyclone Yasi travelled from North Vanuatu to the Queensland coast, the only landmass in Cyclone Yasi's path was New Caledonia, which hardly weakened or did not affect Cyclone Yasi's intensity. Therefore, Cyclone Yasi travelled approximately 2396km across tropical oceans, growing and intensifying the whole time

 

One of the most worrying impact on the natural environment, is the effect the cyclone had on two endangered species, the Southern Cassowary and the Mahogany Glider. Their critically endangered habitat, the Littoral Rainforest Initial assessments showed that about 50% of the Southern Cassowary habitat were severely affected by destructive winds.

 

Cyclone Yasi damaged 175 state schools, 53 catholic schools, 26 independent schools and 5 TAFE colleges 

Banana growers and sugar growers were tragically affected by cyclone Yasi with widespread crop. Cyclone Yasi’s 350 kilometre per hour winds killed over 400 people, and many more injured creating one of the largest death toll in any natural disaster in Australian history.

 

 

Over all, cyclone Yasi figures were collected by damage assessment teams of emergency service workers who performed house-to-house inspections in affected areas like Tully, Cardwell and Ingham. There were 55,000 homes that didn't have power. Cyclone Yasi damaged 175 state schools, 53 catholic schools, 26 independent schools and 5 TAFE colleges. which resulted in  273,944 insurance claims by midnight 27th of January 2012 and paid $309,790,800. Also the government and charities spent approximately 457 million dollars to help communities and businesses that were damaged, 420 million dollars for emergency payments to people in affected areas and 20 million dollars for clean-up were spent and they granted 5,689 claims of income recovery payment and paid $8,021,655. Yasi cost the government nearly $1.5 billion. Tourism suffered, with Queensland losing up to $300 million of revenue, and about $1 billion of damage to national agriculture. Queensland banana and sugar growers $350 million in crop damage causing them to lodge $125 million worth in insurance claims. As a result of supply shortages, banana and sugar prices around Australia rose dramatically.

Red Cross staff and volunteers visited more than 12,000 homes in some of the badly affected areas, including Mission Beach, Tully, Japoonvale and Cardwell. They checked on how people were coping. Red Cross staff and volunteers continued to support families and communities affected by the floods. Red Cross worked with local governments, The Department of Communities and other partner agencies to assist residents across Queensland. More than 1400 Red Cross staff and trained volunteers had been on the ground for a year after cyclone Yasi, assisting flood and cyclone-affected people. Red Cross helped thousands of people affected by the cyclone to get in touch with family and friends.

At the time, Julia Gillard was the prime Minister, told Parliament she has not ruled out an Opposition suggestion to offer $500,000 loans to cyclone-affected businesses. The government also fixed the roads and affected government buildings.
