I cannot sing praise for this book enough. Written in a way that accurately portrays the Middle School mind and experience, Melleby creates a world where queer students, students with non-traditional family structures, and students with disabilities, specifically those of the mental health nature, can see themselves represented in an appropriate, positive way. The book centers on Pluto the summer before 8th grade. At the start of the book when we meet Pluto she is introduced as having depression and the entire novel centers around her trying to become "her normal self" so she can start 8th grade on time and not have to move in with her dad and stepmom in the big city. I think one of my favorite parts of this book is that it talks about Pluto going to therapy and taking antidepressants! While Children's and YA literature has gotten significantly better at including representation of mental disabilities, there is still a huge lack of discussion surrounding actually getting help and treating those mental illnesses, especially by taking medication.
