  • Big data describes very large sets of data. It includes data that has been collected from many sources that is then analysed. Big data is commonly used for making predictions based on patterns. The term used to describe the analysis of big data is data mining.

  • Open data is data that is shared freely. Many organisations now share lots of open data. Journalists often use open data to help create articles. An example of an open data projects is the Skynet project, where amateur astronomers come together to share their findings.
