The View of Factory Owners

Social Darwinism is the idea of survival of the fittest with the economy. The harder you work and the more powerful you are the greater you're gonna do in society. Many bosses believed in this because they thought they should have all of the money since it was their business and they worked hard to build it up, but others believed in the gospel of wealth which was about spreading the wealth around to help the era succeed in society. This was to pretty much distribute the wealth to poor people. So many of the average people believed in the gospel of wealth because a lot of these bosses were the richest people on earth and many believed they shouldn’t have all the money they had.

Union's and Workers Right's

Ok so the bottom line is that they weren’t successful. This is due to the fact of how weak the unions were. Many people opposed all of these strikes because the workers were producing items or services that were essential to the period of time. So there was a bad view by the public on these strikes. Also many people were looking to work so the labors on strike were just replaced with new people that were willing to work. Another way that the unions were weak was because some would give in and start working. During these strikes too the bosses were often helped out by the government . During this period the government and many businesses and factories were very close with the government. During these strikes the police were often called to stop the rallies. So I’m the end they weren’t successful.

Factory owners had many tactics they can use to go against these unions like,

Lockouts where they basically shut the factory down

Hire guards to attack people who want to join a union

Hire scabs to replace people who are protesting better working conditions

Make blacklists of everyone who questions the business owners, so they can’t get hired anywhere else

Yellow dog contracts where they force the workers to sign a contract before hiring them

The government would send in the state Militias, use court orders, and stop any form of protest

In factories these workers were treated very badly. They had poor working conditions, and long days. These factories and sweatshops were usually overcrowded due to all the people who needed jobs to pay for essential needs. Since they were so overcrowded many didn’t have any job to do at times. Also it became very dangerous with that many people working all in one area. These businesses who owned the factories and sweatshops set the wage as low as they could, because they knew many people were fighting for jobs. Women received about ⅓ of what men did.

Children were used as workers in factories, and they participated in the crowded working areas, long hours, and dangerous conditions. Usually children were paid less, because they were given the less rigorous tasks. The children were unable to attend school, so working in these factories was stripping them of their education. Children were considered the ideal workers, because they can be paid less, and they were less likely to be against their working conditions.

Major Strikes and Outcomes

In the 1900’s many people became scared to become a part of unions. Although there were still many strikes that had occured. In the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, there were 500,000 on strike, and federal troops were sent in to stop the violence, and 100+ were killed. In the Homestead strike Carnegie Steel cut wages 20%, and they used lockout, private guards, and strike beaters to stop the steelworkers protests after 5 months of it occurring. The Haymarkey riots were a strike on the 8 hour workday strike, and about 350,000 went on strike. Many were fighting and some were killed. Some police were tried and convicted. The Pullman Strike was when the workers were mad that their wages were cut, and the firing of bargaining leaders. Railroads went on a standstill, there was a count injunction against workers, and many debs & union leaders were arrested. After the strike ended the Debs moved to socialism. The Paterson Silk Strikes occurred because they had many thousands of children working in their factories in unsafe conditions.

Robber Barons

The robber barons were good because some were philanthropists. Philanthropists donated money to charities and other libraries. Other pros were, economy boosts, more efficient workers, more focused on distribution, controlled working environments, and stabilized markets. Some cons of the robber barons are they are the greedy businessmen, exploited workers, vertical integration, and they threatened democratic institutions. The horizontal and vertical integration was used by Carnegie. Vertical integration is when a company tries to own all parts of the business by owning every piece that goes into the product being created. Carnegie used this method with his business.
