Marijuana was first used by Europeans in the 5th century BCE. In 1533, King Henry mandated English farmers to grow hemp on the side. Cannabis was used as a “cure-all” during the early 1900s. Around the 1880s, most paper in the United States, was made out of hemp. The US Declaration of Independence was written on hemp. Some credit William Randolph Hearst with changing the public opinion. He owned many tree farms which was turned into paper. He published on his newspapers that marijuana was linked with Mexican immigrants, crime, and violent behavior. He also changed the spelling from “marihuana” to “marijuana.” In 1937 the Marijuana Tax Act essentially halted legal production of hemp.
