Shortly after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, they began their attack on the Philippines. The American and Filipino armies were overpowered by a significant margin yet the troops were able to hold out for a few months due to the rugged terrain. Hope was lost in the Philippines when MacArthur lost. Hitler thought that by destroying the Soviet economy he could destroy the Soviets. He targeted farmlands, oil fields, factories and Ukraine. Stalin became aware of this and set up troops to keep the Nazi's away. The Soviets were well equipped for this battle and knew that it was going to be cold. By mid 1942, Germany had sunk 360 American ships on the east coast. This triggered America to set up a convoy system around the ships. New technology allowed America to start attacking the submarines.
