         <description><![CDATA[<p>Aristocratic rule was soon challenged by a growing merchant class. As trade expanded, the merchants became more powerful.</p><p>The 600s saw increasing tensions involving aristocratic landowners and an uneven distribution of wealth. City-states selected their colonists by lottery and often prevented them from returning to Greece. As population, trade, and wealth grew, the ancient Greeks began to build cities near coastlines for trade and on hilltops for defense.</p>]]></description>

Each city-state had their own laws and set of customs. Geographic isolation influenced how city states developed in ancient Greece. High mountains surrounded plains and valleys, separating cities from one another. The mountains made it more challenging for some city states to communicate and engage in trade with other city states.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>One form of governing was a monarchy, a government ruled by a single person, such as a king. Another form was an aristocracy, a government ruled by a small group of elite, landowning families.Some historians think that ancient Greeks may have gotten their ideas of city-states, colonization, and sea trade from the Phoenicians. City-states selected their colonists by lottery and often prevented them from returning to Greece. Greek city-states established hundreds of colonies in the Mediterranean region.  Greek cities were distinct from one another, each with its own personality. However, these ancient cities shared certain similarities, too.As population, trade, and wealth grew, the ancient Greeks began to build cities near coastlines for trade and on hilltops for defense.</p>]]></description>

Some tyrants were ruthless, but others made positive changes, including giving farms to the landless and work to the unemployed. In order to take power from tyrants, merchants formed an oligarchy, or a government ruled by a few powerful citizens. One form of governing was a monarchy, a government ruled by a single person, such as a king.</p>]]></description>
