Principle Health Issues South Sudan Refugees Face

There are around 2.4 million South Sudanese refugees that reside in Australia therefore, knowing how to care for these individuals as a nurse is critical (Australia Red Cross, n.d.).

Anaemia and Iron Deficiency

An estimated 9.4 million people, or nearly 76% of the country's population, will require humanitarian aid in 2023. Severe droughts in 2011 and 2015 wreaked havoc. Between 2014 and 2023, the country was affected by destructive floods six times (Mayen, MS et al., 2022). These natural disasters have resulted in the loss of life, relocation, and the death of livestock, which is vital to the livelihoods of South Sudanese. The impact of these events has placed a tremendous strain on the South Sudanese people's fortitude (Reid, 2023). Therefore, when being a healthcare provider to individuals arriving in Australia, it is crucial to be mindful of the fact they not only could be underdeveloped in certain areas but de quite deficient in many vitamins due to malnutrition (Paul et al., 2014). Viable treatment for these types of conditions could include a change of diet by eating foods high in iron and having iron infusions.

Chronic Illnesses

Based on a study done in 2010, results showed that around a quarter of households in the capital city of Juba did not have access to health services when they were ill (Roberts et al., 2010). Noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer are on the rise, adding to the increase in chronic illnesses (Charani et al., 2019). Therefore, when treating a patient who hasn't had access to healthcare, it is important to be mindful of the fact there is a higher chance for diseases and underlying health issues. Treatment can include changing the individual's overall lifestyle choice to minimise the impact of the illnesses.

HIV

South Sudanese people have very limited access to HIV-preventative services and limited education. Very minimal people complete their education past primary school level, and studies show that this leads to high-risk activities, particularly when involving sexual education (Courtney et al., 2017). Due to low education, especially for women, statistics show that new cases of HIV were 1.5 times higher in young women than young men (Mude et al., 2020). As a nurse, the best treatment for HIV is antiretroviral drugs, which stop the virus from replicating in the body as there is no cure (Treatment | Living With HIV | HIV Basics | HIV/AIDS | CDC, n.d.).

Roberts, B., Damundu, E.
Social Determinants of Health

Migrants and refugees in Australia face a challenging environment in which socioeconomic determinants of health play a significant role (Social Determinants of Health, 2019). Income disparities and a lack of social protection frequently impede their access to adequate healthcare. Educational limitations can limit their health competence and prevent them from interacting successfully with healthcare providers. Unemployment and job uncertainty have an impact on their mental and physical well-being, influencing their health trajectory. These issues are compounded by housing limitations and environmental factors, influencing their overall health outcomes. Addressing these determinants is critical for improving the health of Australia's migrant and refugee communities by providing access to quality healthcare, suitable housing, and educational opportunities. Australia can improve social inclusion, eliminate structural tensions, and promote better health outcomes for its varied population by tackling these issues.

The first component of Domain 7 emphasizes the formation and maintenance of self-awareness about one's culture, beliefs, values, and biases. Recognizing the impact of our cultural backgrounds on interactions in healthcare settings is critical. Personally, this meant beginning on an introspective journey. I closely examined my ideas and biases, realizing how they could affect patient care. This self-reflection allowed me to approach every interaction with cultural humility, generating an atmosphere of understanding and trust.
