I am so proud of you. From one trans girl to another: please never forget how powerful, and how loved, you are.

I have some experience with scary, big stages. This past summer, I spoke at a Supreme Court rally in response to the Skrmetti case. I’ve talked to national news reporters, became the first openly transfem class president at my college, and am also just a girl who loves to play sports with my friends. I hope that might help you know you’re not alone.

But this message, this day, it isn’t about me. It’s all about celebrating your fight, your brave demand for equity, and your amazing stand on behalf of so many transfem young people like us. I hope that you really soak in the gratitude, inspiration, and impact people will share on this board and beyond. Please know that there are people all around this country and this world who share that support.

Good luck today, and every day going forward. No matter how the court rules, you have made an impact already — on me, on so many of my friends and peers, and on this world.

But you also shouldn't have to be so brave. When people have said things like this to me in the past, I've felt uncomfortable: I'm just doing my best in bad situation. The way you are being treated by the government is just plain wrong. You deserve to play sports and do all the things other girls are allowed to do. You deserve a life that does not require bravery.

The courage you are showing today makes that beautiful future more likely, not only for yourself, but also for everyone else who should not have to be brave — even ancient 30-somethings like me.

So keep your chin up. Horrible people will say horrible things; don't let that rattle you. You know who you are, and there are so many people who see you and support you. No matter what happens in court, nobody can take that away. You are an amazing young woman with a wonderful life to live and people to help you do it.

You are fifteen years old, standing in the middle of a world that feels dark, cruel, confusing, and loud with fear and disgust; and somehow you still believe in yourself enough to try to make it better. That takes a kind of bravery most grown adults never find. So much of what’s happening isn’t really about you at all. It’s about fear. People are terrified of what they don’t understand, and instead of learning, they lash out.We’ve built a society that treats difference like a threat, like something dangerous that has to be contained or erased. History is full of that kind of cowardice. That's what it is. Cowardice. When the world doesn’t know what to do with strong people, it tries to make them disappear. When the world sees a minority group seeking equal protections under the law, the majority groups become afraid that an equitable living experience for you somehow rips that from them in the process. It's an arrogance with real-world implications for you and others targeted by these kinds of decisions. The rhetoric to try and make you feel small and weak.There will always be people who think their opinions carry more weight than facts. Who believe their discomfort matters more than science, more than truth, more than real human lives. They refuse to see that diversity exists everywhere—woven into nature itself. You can see it in the leaves on the trees, in animals that change sex naturally, in human cultures across time that have always made room for people who didn’t fit neatly into boxes someone else drew.None of this is new. People would know that if we hadn't stopped reading to learn and grow our lived experience. The Supreme Court is just one institution, and lately it’s been failing us in ways that hurt deeply. But it is not the final word on who you are or whether you deserve to exist. No ruling can take away your humanity.Even when outcomes fall short—when they refuse to admit that trans and intersex people are not a threat, not a problem to be feared or exterminated, but people—there are still other spaces where truth lives. Their denial of your humanity and equality, if it comes to that, will not mean you failed. Failure lies in the men and women who have the opportunity to choose doing the right thing and cling harder to their biases and poisoned beliefs.There are still spaces where you won't be expected to shrink under judgement. Other rooms where you will be heard. Other places where the work continues. There will be days when the cruelty doesn’t cut quite so deep. Days when the weight of existing doesn’t feel so heavy, so radical, so exhausting. There is a world where peace feels possible. I promise you that world exists, even if most of us can't see those days yet.Until then, remember where you come from. You are Appalachian. You are a West Virginian.You know our motto. Montani Semper Liberi. Mountaineers are always free.No decision made about you today or tomorrow or any other day gets to decide how free you are. Freedom isn’t something they hand down or take away. It’s something we hold onto, even when they don’t understand why we refuse to let it go. It is ours. Endowed to us by our Creator, inalienable by any forces on Earth or otherwise.And listen—being fifteen is hard even in the best of circumstances. Everything feels huge. Everything feels urgent. The noise never seems to stop. It’s easy for all of it to feel oppressive and unrelenting. But hold onto who you are, Beckys of the world. You are made of everyone who came before you and refused to be told their existence was inconvenient or wrong.That’s a lot of weight to carry. It shouldn’t all be on your shoulders.Hope has a way of surviving. It never fully goes out. There’s always an ember, waiting patiently to be stoked. Sometimes all it needs is time.
