Rose is an exhausted and mellow mother that takes care of Cory and Troy. She tries to do her best even if she is not happy about what is going on. She is a mature person in general and makes sure she stays calm, to not get out of character easily. She very compassionate, putting her dreams in Troy even if he does not do the same thing back.

Rose sees herself as a good and understanding mother to Cory, and a wife to Troy. She feels like she has given it her all in her family, even with their ups and downs. Even though she sees herself as understanding, Troy does not feel the same. Troy does not realize what Rose does for him and is not grateful for her presents in general. That shows since Troy had a secret affair with a woman at the bar. Cory's view on Rose is her being a good parent figure, better than his father, Troy.

Since Troy has not been giving her what she wants and let down her dreams for Troy, she wants something more, for her enjoyment.

Ambition is the theme of the play Fences. Troy's perspective of life has changed negatively since he has underachieved his baseball career. His feelings towards the world shows that he thinks it is unfair. He thinks times have not changed, thinking sports are not fair and mostly African Americans do not get the same treatment as others. This makes him go against his son, Cory, playing football because he thinks Cory is throwing his life away.
