         <description><![CDATA[<div>Here students assess and critically evaluate themselves! Students set themselves goals and learn to <em>monitor their own progress </em>.This can also include peer to peer feedback and assessment. <br><br>This type of assessment is more <em>empowering;</em> it gives the student more ownership over their own work and development. From their self assessments they can make adaptations, adjustments and grow in their thinking. Students learn how to understand what they do and do not know or understand [metacognition]. Using assessments AS learning is not only helping students in their learning goals but also developing an important life skill. <br><br>The teacher is able to help students develop skills of goal setting and self monitoring as well as building an environment where students feel safe to take risks, critically evaluate themselves and grow.<br><br>Examples:<br>-Opportunities to compare work to exemplars. <br>- Asking questions to themselves throughout work to gauge level of understanding.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Norm-referenced assessments are tests that rely on percentile ratings, grouping similarly performing students. This allows the instructor and student to see how the student has performed in relationship to peers within a large sample size. A student who scores 80% or is in the 80th percentile has performed higher than 80% of other test takers in their peer group.<br>Most of these type of assessments are given on a state or national level. They are based on national or state standards which apply to a wide geographical area of students. <br><br>These assessments include tests such as SAT, ACT, California Achievement Test, Iowa Test of Basic Skills, and TerraNova. <br>&nbsp;<br>Reference: <br>K12 Academics.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Catrina Jensen<br>The purpose of this kind of assessment is usually SUMMATIVE and is mostly done at the end of a task, unit of work etc. It is designed to provide evidence of achievement to parents, other educators, the students themselves and sometimes to outside groups (e.g., employers, other educational institutions). ”Rethinking Classroom Assessment with Purpose in Mind”.<br>Assessment of Learning is the assessment that becomes public and results in statements or symbols about how well students are learning. It often contributes to pivotal decisions that will affect students’ futures. It is important, then, that the underlying logic and measurement of assessment of learning be credible and defensible. Diagnostic tools can be either informal, which are easy-to-use tools that can be administered with little training, or standardized, which must be delivered in a standard way by trained staff. Teams may find it helpful to initially consider using more informal and easily accessible diagnostic tools and data to avoid loss of instructional time. Standardized diagnostic tools, which require more time to administer and interpret, may be required for students who continually demonstrate a lack of response or who require special education.<br>The table below provides examples of common diagnostic data sources that may be used in the DBI process.
