“It was complete pandemonium at the Finneys’. Mary Lou had an older sister and three brothers. In addition, there were her parents and Ben. There were football and basketballs lying all over the place and boys sliding down the banister and leaping over tables and talking with their mouths full and interrupting everyone with endless questions.” Pg 45 beginning of the chapter “The Message”

Even though Mary Lou's house was crazy, this played an important role in Sals life because she meets ben. She also gets to see a different part of Phoebe's personality. She sees how Phoebe reacts to the energy and noise of the house and the difference between Phoebe's house and Mary Lou’s house.

“Tiny, squirt trees. Little birdhouses in a row-and one of those birdhouses was ours. No swimming hole, no barn, no cows, no chickens, no pigs. Instead a little white house with a miniature patch of green grass in front of it. It wasn’t enough grass to keep a cow alive for five minutes.” P.g 10

Sal is not used to the small space and doesn’t like it. She misses her old house with all of her farm animals, and of course, she misses all of the memories that she made there.

My father was standing at the far end of the field.”

She really enjoyed her old house and the land that was there as well. When she first came to Euclid she thought about how there are barely any trees and grass and animals which made her sad.

In front of each house was a tiny square of grass, and in front of that was a thin gray sidewalk running alongside a gray road.”

The street is very different from where Sal used to live and in Sal’s mind that makes it bad. She is not afraid of new things, but tends to stay away from them, and she is looking for a reason not to like it. That is why she describes the neighborhood in such a negative way.

Scattered across the lawn were benches and chairs, most of them occupied with patients and their visitors” Page 231.Sal didn’t think about Ben’s family at all. When she finally did it was different then she imagined. She and Ben both have mothers who aren’t there. Even though Ben’s mom is still physically there, she doesn't really acknowledge Ben.
