Even though Mary Lou's house was crazy, this played an important role in Sals life because she meets ben. She also gets to see a different part of Phoebe's personality. Sal is not used to the small space and doesn’t like it. She misses her old house with all of her farm animals, and of course, she misses all of the memories that she made there.

The street is very different from where Sal used to live and in Sal’s mind that makes it bad. She is not afraid of new things, but tends to stay away from them, and she is looking for a reason not to like it. That is why she describes the neighborhood in such a negative way.
