Forestier had given her. Because of this, her husband spends the whole night retracing their steps to find the necklace. Meanwhile, Mathilde sits inside the house overwhelmed by guilt. This shows some laziness on her part as she doesn't help her husband find the necklace. Eventually, both her and her husband pay the full price for her mistake. But she starts to adapt over time. In the text, it says that she toils in the heavy housework and ages faster than normal. However, it's interesting that she never seems to complain. This means that she is determined to pay off her debts and is willing to work hard for it. In the end, she is glad that the debt has been paid off. However, all that work was not necessary because the necklace was fake.
