In the beginning of the story, the female of the story is seen as Greedy because she gets invited to a ball but claims she doesn’t have anything nice enough to go, so she makes her husband who saved up money for a gun to buy an expensive dress for her. She is also very boastful at the ball because she thinks she’s the prettiest girl there since she borrowed a diamond necklace. Another trait is that she is envious at the beginning of the story because she is lower middle class and wants to be higher class. ~Jacqueline Vermette

Mathilde in the middle class setting was very wishful of someday being upper class, because she was always comparing what she had with what she wanted. She also was pretty ungrateful and insatiable, not being happy with what she kept receiving, like the ticket and the dress. Mathilde was also inconsiderate of her husband trying so hard to make her happy and sacrificing money he could have used for himself. Lastly, she was jealous of others with more than her, like how she was jealous of her rich friend and couldn’t even go to her house without feeling bad about her own wealth. - Maria Avlonitis

Throughout the beginning of the story Mathilde was a women in the middle class that didnt quite like her placement, she wished to be placed into the said upper class one day. She was stuck being unappreciative and would take for granted what she had in life and would always envy more. Mathilde was quite ungrateful, inconsiderate, and foolish. She was never content with the beauty she did receive in life such as when her husband took his hard earned cash and felt obligated to purchase her a gown for the ball. Once receiving the dress she became boostful and as if she was above everyone else, trying to fit in with the said rich but she was a fake. Being in a society where they wanted to except her and not focus on her wealth Mathilde could not give over the wealth concerns.

The situation was when Mathilde was at the ball and was upper class for one night. Her traits were gorgeous, confident, obsessed, extroverted, classy, and cordial. The text says that she was prettier than them all, elegant, gracious, smiling, and crazy...all the men looked at her... danced with intoxication, with passion, made drunk by pleasure.

Towards the end of the story, Mathilde is forgetful about the expensive jewelry that Mme. Forestier had given her. Because of this, her husband spends the whole night retracing their steps to find the necklace. Meanwhile, Mathilde sits inside the house overwhelmed by guilt. This shows some laziness on her part as she doesn't help her husband find the necklace. Eventually, both her and her husband pay the full price for her mistake. But she starts to adapt over time. In the text, it says that she toils in the heavy housework and ages faster than normal. However, it's interesting that she never seems to complain. This means that she is determined to pay off her debts and is willing to work hard for it. In the end, she is glad that the debt has been paid off. However, all that work was not necessary because the necklace was fake. It is safe to assume that she feels used and that all those years were wasted.

In the beginning of the story, Mathilde doesn't have a ton of money but isn't particularly poor enough to not survive. In this situation, we learn that she dreams of being rich and living a luxurious lifestyle. "She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and luxuries." (paragraph 3) She is an entitled and envious woman, who seems to believe she should have been born in a lavish lifestyle.
