Diggers dad held up Paulie's medals. One of the soldiers came up to them and told them that he was one of Paulie's mates and that he was a real hero. Digger was thinking about  all the poems that he had read and thinking of writing his own, but he decided to wait till later on. when they got home Digger tried on one of Paulie's old shirts, his Mum saw him wearing it and started to cry and hugged Digger "Oh, digger," she said, Digger felt like it was the saddest moment he had ever experienced.
