Since we first met when I was a faculty candidate, you have shown me what genuine care and mentorship looks like-- from offering your house while I searched for my own, to taking the time to check in and truly listen, to always offering that I sit down and chat when I would come to your office with questions (lots and lots of questions). Your mentorship has made me a better educator and researcher and I will be forever grateful for having you in my life and career. 

The monstera cutting you gave me my first year at IC has tripled in size and represents how your support and guidance have helped me to grow and flourish. To pay it forward, I have shared a clipping of this maturing monstera with a fellow plant-loving research student of my own. 

I am just one example of the thousands of students and colleagues you have touched over your long and illustrious career. Our department and profession are better for having you in them.

You have been such a large presence in my success as an OT, starting out as my advisor and thesis advisor as a student. I remember Sunday morning meetings at your house, working through my thesis. Down the road, I ran into you at Cinemopolis and a few days later, you asked me if I would be interested in teaching. After a moment of complete shock, I said yes and the rest is history! And finally, inviting me to be a part of your powered mobility research and trusting that I wouldn’t break the robot. Your kindness  has certainly been greatly appreciated as well.
The OT department will certainly not be the same without you!

You have left a great legacy at IC and your caring and commitment to our students is something to aspire to. You are not really retiring, but merely changing your context as you continue to develop and work towards bringing your TotBot out of the lab and into peoples' lives and homes. Your on-going work towards improving the lives of the clients you have dedicated your scholarship to will be a crowning glory of your vast contributions to occupational justice. Thank you for bringing me into the world of higher education! When I relocated to Ithaca in 2006, you were the first OT I had contact with. I contacted you wondering where pediatric therapists worked in Ithaca. You said that I should come help with the OT program at Ithaca College. Never in a million years had I seen myself in the academic setting. Fourteen years later, I’m still here and love it every day! Thank you for serving as a mentor, encouraging me to pursue scholarly activities, and always receiving my ideas with a warm smile. I send you heartfelt congratulations on your retirement.
