The Duwamish Tribe should be recognized by the Federal Government, the core reason stems from the lack of land given. If provided more land then the Duwamish would fulfill the criteria of what the Federal Government considers a Native American Tribe.

Originally the Duwamish were recognized as a Tribe and promised that in exchange for land they would receive a reservation and other economic benefits. But then that was taken back, so if these things were orginally promise why should they be revoked now when other Tribes received those benefits later on.

After the Duwamish were displaced there river was industrialized. This ruined habitats for salmon and produced a lot of industrial waste. Though efforts have been made to fix the river it still hasn’t been restored to its orginal state

after finally being recognized as the Duwamish of Renton 48 hours later President Bush revoked the recognition. Later that year the Tribe seeked out recognition once again being told they didnt fulfill the criteria for political reasons.

When settlers first came to the Washington areas the Duwamish Cheif welcomed them with opens arms wanting peace. However he was not met with the same hospitality

The Duwamish not only should get recognition but needs recognition. They came to settlers hoping for peace and generously gave up their land without getting anything in return. History has hurt the Duwamish tribe which is the reason its a smaller tribe, but with the help of federal recognition it will grow to the point no one would question if its an “authentic” Tribe.
