Grandfather is important to his family in that he keeps Kaw tradition alive. He does in many ways. One way is that he wears beaded moccasins, rather than shoes, and kept his hair in traditional, tight braids. He also tells stories about his childhood and relate them to Kaw rituals. He tells Mary and Roger about the traits of a warrior. Grandfather also trains them for Ta-Na-E-Ka, which he along with many other family members, says that the children must endure even if they aren't going to become warriors. He settles on sending them out for five days rather than the overly harsh eighteen days, and allows them to wear a bathing suit rather than nothing, to keep these rituals alive in a more modern world than the world at the time of his own childhood.

Although Mary does not approve of Ta-Na-E-Ka and many other Kaw traditions, she does approve of the fact that the Kaws were one of the first, or, as she claims, the first Indian tribe to give both women and men equal rights. Mary has a considerable amount of evidence to support this claim. Mary says that unlike many other Sioux tribes, Kaw men and women were permitted to eat together. Also, in a marriage arranged by the prospective bride's father, the would-be bride had the right to refuse to marry their arranged husband. Additionally, "wise" women were commonly a part of tribal councils, the superhero of Kaw mythology was "Good Woman." Also, unfortunately for Mary, girls as well as boys must go through the pain of Ta-Na-E-Ka.
