Primary Discourse is the sense of self, community and culture we learn starting at birth. Secondary Discourses are acquired later to help us fit in with social settings we may encounter throughout our lifetime.

Discourses are acquired, not learned. We as educators must give students a place and time to practice new discourses. Students need to practice a real world application to acquire new Discourses. By giving students the chance to practice young, they will pick up and adapt to new Discourses and social settings they may encounter throughout their lifetime. We as teachers must be aware of our students primary Discourses. We can use the variety of primary Discourses to introduce our students to the many Discourses around us.
