(ii) the poet vividly conveys the persona’s feelings towards his mother in the rest of the poem through the use of imagery. the poet uses imagery to describe the poet’s hopeless feelings towards his mother and this is seen in the phrases “words anchor thought” and “angry swirls”.  the use of the words “anchor” and “swirls” creates the impression in the reader that the persona’s feelings towards his mother is akin to that of an unstable and chaotic sea, as implied by the adjective “angry”. moreover, “Hope” is personified to have a “slippery pontoon”, which alludes to the image of a body of water, like a sea, that is ever so fleeting, which implies that the persona is slowly becoming more and more hopeless to help his mother with dementia. Thus the poet uses imagery to emphasise the despair and fluctuating sense of hope in which the persona is feeling towards his mother

The writer feels hopeless and in constant distress, alongside her mother who is suffering from dementia whose condition only deteriorates with time. Her mother slowly transforms into an unfamiliar figure, which makes the writer fall into a state of helplessness in her failure to aid her mother's illness. In the first two lines of the first stanza; "Every visit I find you where I left you, We haven't moved" implies that his/her mother's condition shows no progress despite the countless visits from the persona. In line 10; "(I) felt my bruises the entire length of each stay" this accentuates the persona's woe and affliction that she was incapable of ameliorating her mother's dementia. In the last line of the first stanza; "Where are they?" this suggests that her illness has hit a peak where even her own mother is unrecognizable to her, her actions, words, demeanour were unlike before which made the persona unsettled. The poem's title us "Notes To My Mother" where "notes" suggests that the persona wrote the poem as a consolidation of his and his mother's interactions for his mother to read so that she remembers their interactions. This would also reveal that the persona truly loves his mother for he went this far to write down "notes" for his mother suffering from dementia. However, this love he gives to his mother is not reciprocated as "Each visit I find you where I left you We haven't moved" implying that their relationship did not improve emotionally and only stayed stagnant. These first lines also highlights the hurt the persona experiences knowing that his relationship with his mother cannot improve due to her dementia. Later on the persona also speaks in an almost gibberish manner where he expresses that "You do not wish to We do not wish you to Do not wish to Really do". His incoherence seems to reveal his ambivalence and frustration at his situation with his mother as he struggles to formulate the words and proper sentences needed to accurately and properly articulate his feelings towards his mother suffering from dementia. In addition, the quote is italised possibly to convey to others that having a person in their life is extremely emotionally taxing as it naturally draws the attention of the reader to a quote that is almost nonsensical, making its message clear, direct and effective.
