I chose this topic as it an issue I saw growing up in a Hispanic agricultural community on the central coast of California. Food insecurity is a major issue in underserved communities like the Hispanic communities of California. This presentation pushed me to study a topic that I did not know much about. It shows that I am capable of researching and presenting on any topic necessary. This padlet is the culminating project of a course on crisis, trauma and mental health concerns. I am extremely proud of this project. The padlet contains all assignments from the course as well as resources on the national and local level. It contains research completed on crisis counseling, trauma resources, some mental health issues and how to counsel individuals with them. As a college counselor I will not be a licensed counselor. That means that I will be required to refer students to helping professionals that can adequately assist them. This padlet contains some of those resources and discussion of other professional positions that I will be in contact with. There are also some trainings linked that I plan to complete when done with my master's degree program.

This information is incredibly relevant when it comes to college counseling in my area. As shown in this presentation, a majority of students are Hispanic and first-generation. Because of this, counseling strategies and outreach must reflect the needs of the community. I chose to create a group for first-generation community college students. The students selected would be at risk of failing within the college process. Group lessons include information on financial aid, major exploration, offered programs, transfer pathways and how to succeed in college. This information could be detrimental to student success and degree completion. Another aspect of the group would be hearing successful first-generation college student stories and interacting with them. To create this lesson plan I pulled from college resources and also personal experience. This assignment demonstrates the student learning outcome "Demonstrate the knowledge, abilities, skills, and dispositions necessary to broadly integrate mental health and wellness counseling concepts into their chosen counseling field".

It is extremely important for counselors to reflect on their biases and experiences and how that will influence their interactions with clients. Culture and lived experiences change each of us and those changes are relevant in the counseling field. This assignment also utilized the wellness wheel. The wheel and quiz that go along with it gauge an individuals level of wellness across different categories. Using the wellness wheel was very beneficial as it showed me what parts of my own wellness I can improve upon. This assignment demonstrates the student learning outcome "Demonstrate proficient knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills necessary to be effective within the chosen specialization".

The assignment was to watch a video recording of all three sessions and reflect upon them. I found this very beneficial as I learn well from observation. It also demonstrates learning about the beginning of counseling and who created it. Within it I discuss the process of reporting when necessary and referring/consulting with other professionals on the college level. I learned that it will be necessary for me to collaborate with many other individuals to serve my students. I will also be a mandated reporter meaning I will have to report any cases of abuse that are revealed to me. This changes how I will interact with students as it will be necessary for me to inform them of this fact.  This assignment demonstrates the Student Learning outcome "Apply the ethical standards and principles of the counseling profession, and adhere to the legal aspects of the role of the counselor".

By viewing the student learning outcomes and professional dispositions listed by Angelo State University I was able to view how the program has prepared me to enter the counseling field. These dispositions focus on professional traits such as: communication, work ethic, valuing diversity, professional appearance and more. In addition to the provided dispositions the assignment included inventing my own. I chose to focus on self-reflection and self-care as a professional. By utilizing both of these counselors can better serve clients.
