was the oldest son of a merchant. He initially studied law. In 1889, he developed an illness. While he was recovering, his mother brought him some art supplies and he began painting. Although he did not excel in some of his subjects, he won prizes for
drawing and for music.

After leaving school, Rousseau served in the army for four years from 1863, before leaving to work for the French government.

He worked as a tax collector for the Paris Customs Office between 1871 and 1893.

Prior to his early retirement in 1893, painting was a hobby for Rousseau.
