This is a funny quote that I wanted to include in my journal since the line weight is extremely thin. The font used in this quote is a sans serif and all of the letters are capitalized. The tight tracking makes the words difficult to read. The leading or space between the baselines is horrible and causes legibility issues.

This is an interesting Vans apparel advertisement I found. The first thing I noticed was the swash on the capital M. This type has a unique array of descenders and loops. I thought that this unique script font was difficult to read. The typeface consists of bold white lettering with a thin orange outline. One thing that works effectively for this typeface is the tracking.

I noticed that the cap height is different for all the letters in this typeface. The spray paint splatter effect has affected the height of the letters. The kerning is tight which has caused some of the letters to touch.

This example is a quote from a magazine I was reading. I think it was an interesting choice to make the whole text a graffiti font. When I was trying to read this quote for this first time I had a difficult time discerning certain words. Overall, the readability and legibility of this typeface is poor. One thing I noticed is that the kerning is different for every word. As well as, the tracking is strange. For example, the words, point and where, are almost touching. Whereas, the words, A and Pretty, are far apart from each other.

I found this type in an advertisement for five gum which would explain the weird quote. I noticed the font is mirrored above and below the words. The opacity of the mirrored font is low but I could tell that the font is trying to look like an afterimage. The quote is a sans serif font but the linework is jagged. I think the tracking is too tight and it negatively affects the readability. The choice to make the color white works well with the black background.

As well as, why is the word ‘the’ lowercase when everything else is capitalized.

There are also three different fonts in this example which I thought was excessive.

The first thing I noticed was the bold white lettering and the bright blue outline. The type is overlaid on top of each other which explains the reasoning for the blue outline. If you overlay the white letters and remove the blue outline they would all blend together and would be unreadable. I also thought the way the type was slanted looked interesting.

I’m surprised that this is an actual advertisement for a real shoe company. This typeface includes a different font for each letter.

This an example I found of a skateboard company’s type-driven logo. At first, I thought this was a well-designed typography logo but then I took a closer look. The bar of the ‘H’ and the object under the O are unique design choices. The shape of the S is strange and negatively affects the legibility. The font design is a strange bold serif with multiple outlines. The choice to have three different colors does not work. I would get rid of the outer black outline which would fix that problem.

For this example, I’m using an advertisement from the company, Vans. The word, spawn, is designed in this unique horror looking font. The kerning for each word is different. The ‘W’ and the ‘N’ are touching whereas the ‘W’ and ‘A’ are spaced far apart. There is a thin black outline under the red lettering which makes the word look as if it is floating. The bowl of the ‘P’ is a triangle shape instead of the customary circular shape. I think that change helps to make the word look more interesting and match the rest of the letters.

I found this signature of a person named Kyle Leeper and I wanted to share it in my journal. This typeface is difficult to explain since it is all over the place. Each letter in the name is a different font. There is a mixture of sans serifs and serifs fonts as well as other creative fonts. The most interesting character to me is the ‘e’. Every letter is uppercase except the ‘e’ and the ‘e’ looks to be a picture of pipes in the shape of an e. The cap height of this text is all over the place. The kerning also has some letters spaced far apart and some colliding with each other.

The school used a simple serif font for this logo. However, they capitalized the word, VCU, and made, arts, all lowercase. I think that was an excellent design choice. Another interesting aspect is that the cap height and x-height are the same. The kerning is also well done, none of the letters are too close to each other.

The purple and red/yellow font color works well on top of the blue background. The descenders and swashes in this typeface are a great design choice. The kerning makes the letters combine in certain parts which actually works in this situation. However, I think the tracking is too tight, the words are getting too close together which hurts readability. The leading could also be increased to separate the word, Rock from Jazz.

This is another example from one of my vinyl records. I love the unique cover art on my vinyl records and they always seem to have interesting typography. I picked this example because of the large black drop shadow behind the word, GREAT MOMENTS. If you separate the drop shadow, then the typeface is not interesting. However, it is interesting to pair a thin sans serif font with such a large outline. The kerning is working well. The letters are spaced far apart so that the black outline doesn’t blend which would ruin the 3D effect.

This example is from the Star Wars soundtrack. Although this example is pretty simple, I still think it’s interesting. The first thing I noticed is how some of the letters combine to form a ligature. The leg of the ‘R’ and the ‘S’ extend and form attachments to other letters. I think it is awesome the way the letters in this typeface form the iconic Star Wars logo. I also found it interesting that this typeface is just a black outline with a translucent interior.

This is one of my favorite examples I included in this journal. This example is from the vinyl record I have of the soundtrack from the movie, Grease. The thing I find most interesting about this typeface is the way the loop of the ‘G’ and the bottom of the ‘S’ form the tires of the car. I think the red outline being a car really brings this entire typeface together. The ligature is strange in that the letters are combined in weird areas. For example, the ‘R’ is attached under the serif of the ‘G’. The Cap Height is also affected by the ‘G’ and ‘S’.

I got this example from my collection of vinyl records. I think this font is super unique and the word ‘Liar” looks amazing. The first thing I noticed was the color choice. I think the red to orange gradient works well with the space background. I think an interesting design choice was the size of the counter in the letter ‘A’ and ‘R’. I think the hidden gem in this typeface is the way the leg of the ‘R’ lines up with the counter of the ‘A’. The semicircle shape of the tittle above the ‘i’ is working well in this design.

Duran Duran has a seemingly simple type design but when I looked closer I noticed some idiosyncrasies. I used this album cover to show a simple yet interesting type design. This typeface features a blue serif font with a white outline. The leg of the ‘R’ and the stem of the ‘A’ are the interesting parts of this design because of their weird angles. Another interesting aspect is the kerning because it makes it look like Duran Duran is one word.

I found this example on one of the covers of my vinyl records. The, SWING, font is similar to one of my other examples that said vaudeville. I think the shape of the letter is interesting. The stem of the letter is bold whereas everything else is thin. The main thing I find interesting in this example is the word, Hooked on. The script font is blue with a white stripe in the middle of it which makes it look like an old neon sign. Another design choice that works well is the terminal of the ‘n’ and the bar of the ‘H’.

This example is a logo off of one of my t-shirts. The first thing I noticed was the way all the little dots form the word, Thrasher. I think the color choice is interesting and pairs well with the dark green shirt. The cap height is different for all the letters. Each letter is uniquely its own type of font. The curvature of the word, Thrasher, is perfect for a shirt as well.

I got this example from a Chinese takeout menu. I thought it was interesting that the drop shadow is what forms the typeface. I think this is a poor type design because of the lack of readability and legibility. The lettering is the same color as the background which makes it difficult to read. The leading is too large, the distance between the two words should be smaller.
