Santiago is a falconer and he is meant to understand the danger connoted by this bird. However, he fails to see anything deeper in his love for falconry which was bad omen for danger. The symbolism of falcons and other birds underscores the themes of fate, predestination, and the unheeded warnings leading up to his death.

"...she searched for his name among the shadows..." The language used to describe the moment when she reveals his name adds a sense of mystery, doubt to this revelation. It gives readers multiple questions and challenges the brothers' response which does not seek to verify anything. This is the author's way of challenging the notion of honour killings.

It directly contradicts the severely wounded Santiago. This dramatic narration helps us re-interpret the murder itself. This displaces the dominant narrative and causes readers to question how such a gruesome murder could have been committed with a knife that remains clean. This makes the hidden cultural beliefs more visible than the terrible images being described.
