Lots of students struggle with writing because of how complex it is. </p><p>With writing, it is important to focus on it as a whole. Writing encompasses lots of skills, one of the most important is understanding. The ability of a student to understand what they are writing should be the most important skill.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Writing is reflected in the science subject through skills like experiment reports, analysis, etc. Writing in science will be more algorithmic compared to a subject like English. Scientific writing leaves less room for creativity, with stricter guidelines and templates to follow. One of the most important writing skills to teach in science classes is how to write a scientific paper. This a form of document that follows a format of title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion.</p><p><br/></p><p>Class Example:</p><p>When writing a report on an in-class experiment on taste-altering substances, students must begin with the test question, hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable, and controls. Students must write down the materials (like Miracle berry tablets, bitter melon, lemon juice), and write down the steps (methods) of the experiment (who ate what, and the order it was consumed). The results must also be recorded (the normally bitter or sour food tasted sweet after the berry pill). Finally, the students will write their conclusions. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Comprehension is the key to learning. While some information can be obtained without deeper understanding, comprehension is necessary to be able to explain, elaborate, and build upon topics. Comprehension is crucial for building higher level thinking. It is one thing to know that proteins denaturing leads to loss of function, it is another to know why. The "why" behind natural processes is a big deal, it's what theories are all about. A law is a description of what happens, and a theory is why that happens. </p><p><br/></p><p>Class Example:</p><p>In the process of learning about waves, students will learn that sound waves cannot move through empty space even though light can. To comprehend that, students have to understand that light is an electromagnetic wave, which can move through a vacuum, while sound is a mechanical wave, which requires a medium to travel. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Science is a vocabulary-heavy subject. Words like mitosis and meiosis have to be distinguished along with sequences like prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. Not only do the terms have to be remembered, so do the definitions, visuals, and the order they come in. Because of this, science can sometimes feel like a lot of memorization. There's a ton of vocabulary, a lot of it sounds similar, and some are even common words but with a different meaning! It's why its important to have mnemonics like PMAT and "My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos." Vocabulary strategies like flashcards, Kahoot, and even hand gestures are used. </p><p><br/></p><p>Class Example:</p><p>During a cell division unit in high school biology, students will learn to distinguish terms like "Chromatin, Chromatid, Centromere, Centriole, and Chromosome," and the definitions.</p>]]></description>
