Source:Although food was scarce, somehow or other,we could survive on things that we could lay our hands in. In order to survive, you try to make use of every part of fruit you ate.For instance, even the skin from cempedak can be eaten. The seed, which is hard, can be boiled until its becomes soft and edible. You can even eat the shells of groundnuts.

Source From: Abu Bakar bin Ali,a worker in a Japanese shipyard during Japanese Occupation.

Source Type: written

Time Period:During Japanese Occupation

Area of research:Food

Inference:This source suggests that the lives of teenagers in Singapore was harsh.Since the Japanese took almost all of the food that they had,the teenagers were forced to search high and low for food survive such as fruits and even food from the ground.

Source:During the Japanese occupation, the people in Singapore faced severe food shortages. This was because Singapore's entrepot trade was disrupted and all available resources were used to support Japan's war efforts in other parts of Asia. Rationing was introduced to control the sales of essential items like rice, sugar and salt. Each household was issued with a 'Peace Living Certificate' which entitled them to a number of ration cards to purchase essential goods. Once a month, people would line up at the kumiai shop (distribution association) for hours to purchase whatever rations that were available. During that time, it affects their life a lot because they do not have a freedom to like buy them freely rather than using the Malaya Ration Card.

Source From:Internet

Source Type: written

Time Period:During Japanese Occupation

Area of research:Food

Inference:This source suggests that the lives of teenagers in Singapore was inadequate as they had very little food sources and therefore had to make newer recipes to make more food for themselves.

Source:Food quality and availability decreased greatly. Sweet potatoes and yams became the staple food of most diets of Singaporeans because they were considerably cheaper than rice and could also be grown in gardens. They were then turned into a variety of dishes, as both dessert and all were used in all three meals of the day. The nutrients helped to fend starvation off; new ways of consuming tapioca with other products were regularly invented to stave off the monotony. Both the British and Japanese authorities encouraged the population to grow their own food if they had even the smallest amount of land. The encouragement and produce were similar to what occurred with victory garden in the Western nations during World War II. Ipomoea aquatica , which grew relatively easy and flourished relatively well near the water, became a popular crop, as did other vegetables.

Source From:Internet

Source Type:written

Time Period:During Japanese Occupation

Area of research:Food

Inference:They had less food quality and availability but the British and Japanese to grow their own food even though they had smallest amount of land.

In conclusion, people survived through a hard time during Japanese Occupation. The Japanese took their food for themselves. There was very little food so people could not have proper food for their daily lives. So they were only allow to eat limited amount of food from ration cards and even line for hours for some food. They also eat food from the ground. Also whatever food they got, they will try to eat it until every edible part of it is eaten.People in prison also suffered because the Japanese does not give them enough food to eat. They get their food by making themselves their own recipe. The Japanese Occupation changed their style of living, from having lots of food and having fun to less food available for themselves and under strict rules by the Japanese which makes them insecure.Although the Japanese encouraged them to grow their food, they still do not have enough food to survive on.During Japanese Occupation, people easily starve to death from the insufficient food available to them. They even disrupted Singapore entrepot which caused their food to decrease because they will not get other countries food. Most of the families lived on a diet with porridge with sweet potato or tapioca.
