My mom has always pushed my siblings and I to give our all in everything, never settling for less than our best. From the beginning, she has loved and supported me as best she can, sacrificing time and energy to impact the lives of my friends and our family. Amanda regularly spends time with her nieces and nephews, giving their mom a free day and providing the kids with fun experiences such as baking cinnamon rolls and going to the Science Center. Each one of these little “granito” actions is unnecessary to some extent. She doesn’t have to handwrite notes or teach young kids to bake. Nevertheless, she pours out her life to meet the unseen needs of others. Amanda’s energy, amazing work ethic, and loving heart influence and inspire those around her, including me. I am so proud to have such a wonderful mom.

She may not have been the president of the United States, but she has greatly contributed to “mi granito de arena” in my community. Jeriann McLaughlin is a part of the Ballard Community School District staff. She founded and works at the Ballard Community Food and Clothing Pantry in Huxley, Iowa. The BCFCP provides affordable food and clothing to students and families in the district. 

Jeriann has most definitely shown “mi granito de arena” by being greatly involved in her community by serving others and volunteering, also encouraging others to volunteer and serve, especially young people. She loves and cares for others a lot, and she is also happy to get involved and work with those in need.

He loves the work that he is doing to contribute to the community. He has a full-time job working for a tree service, but he still goes out of his way to do what he can to improve the natural environment. During the summer he takes his truck out and waters the trees planted at the end of my street. A few years ago he even made a tree nursery behind my house that was expanded recently. All the trees grown in the nursery get transplanted around town. My Dad cares a lot about nature and wants to use it in ways that benefit us and the natural ecosystem.

Peggy Whitson won many awards while she worked at NASA for 37 years and completed three long- duration missions. She is the first woman from Iowa that has been an astronaut working for NASA and became the first woman to be a Commander for NASA. Even though she was born and raised in Iowa, she had served as chief for the Astronaut Corps, and she was also responsible for preparing for missions for the International Space Station in 2005-2012, and has been trained to be a backup space station commander for the Expedition 14.  She worked hard throughout her life so she could become an astronaut, which later led her to become the first Iowa woman commander.

He was known as an underdog and was the very last pick in the 2022 NFL draft for the 49ers. He rose from the very bottom and is now one of the most successful NFL quarterbacks and he just made the Superbowl this year. He has a few records in the NFL, but he is going more in the future. He is a role model for everyone back in Iowa. He has encouraged me to chase my dreams in sports and work hard to achieve them. He helps people talk about their religion and is a role model in Christianity.

The way he has helped me specifically is by leading a small group of kids in the youth ministry at Cornerstone. Even though he is the lead pastor of a large church, he steps down and leads as a volunteer group leader to help reach some high-school boys. He has impacted me and many others at Cornerstone just by getting on a more personal level by spending time with us in small groups. That personal connection makes a big difference when compared to other leaders in my life. Knowing him and where he comes from helps him have a larger impact on me and all the other people he connects with.

Their business is about helping thousands of farmers worldwide by providing a more cost-effective option when repairing combines. A combine is a machine designed to harvest a variety of grain crops. They also provide many people with jobs that can get money for themselves and their families. Ihle Fabrications, LLC is a farmer-built company in Central Iowa that has become a leading manufacturer for parts to repair combines and other equipment. They are Certified Case IH Reman partners, as well as making parts for John Deere, Claas, Drago and more. These companies make farming equipment to help farmers with their needs. They contribute to “Mi granito de arena” by helping farmers repair their equipment and help these companies sell their products. Farmers produce the crops that help to feed, fuel and clothe a growing world, while caring for the lands and waters on which their livelihoods depend.

Ibn Mājid wrote several books on marine science and the movements of ships, which helped people of the Persian Gulf to reach the coasts of India, East Africa and other destinations. Among his many books on navigation, Kitāb al-Fawā’id fī Uṣūl ʿIlm al-Baḥr wa’l-Qawāʿid (The Book of the Benefits of the Principles and Foundations of Seamanship) is considered one of his best. It is an encyclopedia, describing the history and basic principles of navigation, latitudeand longitude by way of celestial navigation, lunar mansions, loxodromes, the difference between coastal and open-sea sailing, the locations of ports from East Africa to Indonesia, accounts of the monsoon and other seasonal winds, typhoons and other topics for professional navigators. Ibn Mājid was known as a muʿallim (“teacher”, the title for pilots), teacher of navigation. Most of his navigational calculations depended on sophisticated astronomical observations, especially using the lunar mansions (manāzil al-qamar) and the thirty-two stellar rhumbs (akhnān).

Ever since I was born I’ve been blessed to have a mother like her, she is truly an amazing and inspirational woman and she’ll always make a difference in our community in my opinion, she always made sure that everyone she’s surrounded by is always happy and loved.

She truly made a difference in other people lives, she constantly made sure to donate for people in need.

Im extremely grateful to have a mother like her and I wouldn’t change it for the world…

Tim recognized this need, and realized the unrealized potential of millions of computers connected together via the Internet.

A graduate of the University of Oxford, Tim teaches at MIT as a 3Com Founders Chair Professor of Engineering and also works in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). He is also Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electronics at the University of Southampton, UK, Director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and author of Weaving the Web and other publications.
