In my former experience, I had 2 co-teachers split on different days. One never planned with us and would come into class not knowing what was going on many times, and one was afraid to teach a whole group lesson. I did all the grading, but progress was discussed. It seemed like there were too many cooks in the kitchen with an extremely tough class behaviorally. The students however were actually accepting of them as their teachers also. We had many issues, some got worked out, some did not. It was definitely a learning situation, but also very stressful. I was also in a situation years ago in a bilingual setting and it worked out so nicely with 2 teachers in the classroom full time, that made a difference. Sari Dempsey

My takeaway for Chapter 1 is that co-teaching takes a lot of communication, effort, mutual respect, and teamwork. Co-teaching is a way of teaching, not just something you say you do because administration told you that you will do it. It is sometimes hard to co-teach with someone that you have never worked closely with before; however, if the two co-teachers take the time to establish routines, ways to communicate, and responsibilities with each other, it will eliminate unnecessary tension or roadblocks. Co-planning is critical to co-teaching. This allows both teachers to come prepared, to know which co-teaching model they will use for the lesson, and for the lesson to run smoothly. I loved the Communication Strategies (Table 1.5) that were listed in the book. The examples would be extremely helpful in moving things forward in a positive manner between two co-teachers. I know some people who could use them in their co-teaching situations now, and I know that I could have used them in the past! -Kim Wivell

"Teacher Collaboration is Not an Option: It is a Must" - just as it is stated, it is needed! There are many opportunities for collaboration in the classroom and collaboration and co-teaching can and will look different in each classroom, each day. A strong foundation must be made. A trusting environment is needed in order to build a relationship between teachers. The different communication strategies are beneficial to teams working together in the best interest of students. Reevaluating as needed is an important step that teams need to ensure they do not forget to take. -Robert Koogle

It is not only important for all teachers of EL students to collaborate and communicate, but it is very important for all teachers to get to know these students as well. The best teaching and learning takes place when relationships have been fostered and routines have been established with all necessary parties, not just the general education teacher and students. These relationships can only be formed if all teachers involved in the students' education willingly work together to develop a cohesive environment where teachers and students alike are respected and all educational needs are met with best practices. - Mary Hood

My takeaway from Chapter 1 is that co-teaching takes a lot of commitment from both teachers. Both teachers need to be willing to communicate and have a mutual respect for one another. As the book states on page 9, "the simple placement of two teachers in the same room does not constitute an instant teaching partnership." Trust and communication needs to be established early in the partnership in order for this teaching technique to be effective. I believe it is crucial for teachers to change their mindset from "I and My" to "We and Ours." - Britney Cook

Teacher collaboration is a must and everyone should work together as one unit to plan, teach, assess, and reflect as needed so that each student receives the best instruction possible. Collaboration allows professionals to determine strategies that are successful, and strategies that are not successful. Collaboration in developing student learning tasks better guarantees that all of the individual student needs will be met, as each professional has different knowledge about each student depending on the relationship and rapport they have built with the student, and each professional has different skill sets to be able to effectively assist student needs. - Ruth Georg

After reading this chapter I have developed a greater understanding of co-teaching and how it benefits our students who are ELs. Co-teaching means that there are two teachers taking on all responsibilities of one class. Though one teacher may have specific strengths, both need to have the expertise to teach whole group and small group with all content areas. Teachers need to trust each other, take risks and work towards a common goal. In order to make co-teaching work the co-teachers need to have a significant amount of time together to plan for instruction, monitor evidence of learning, and establish a positive learning environment.
Erin Coffey

Meaningful teacher collaboration is the key to co-teaching. Teachers must work together to collaboratively plan, share instructional strategies, analyze student data, reflect, and alter lessons to best fit the needs of all students in the classroom. Students should not be able to tell the difference between the EL teacher and the general education teacher. Co-teachers must trust each other and set high expectations for themselves and their students. They must share decision making, set goal together and discuss rules/routines prior to beginning their co-teaching class. One idea for getting to know your co-teacher is filling out a "What I am good at..., What I would like to learn or improve" questionnaire. This will help co-teachers understand their strengths/challenges. Co-teaching environments must provide authentic opportunities for students to practice speaking, writing, reading, and listening. -Tiffany Ledyard

In order for co-teaching to be successful it is important that all educators involved with the students work together to plan and develop a learning environment that has strong relationships and established routines.

The greatest takeaway from this chapter is the importance of the collaborative practice that must occur between the general education teacher and the EL teacher. This collaboration provides the foundation for a successful learning environment. There must be a shared understanding and ownership of the academic, linguistic and socio-emotional development of EL students. In order for this to be effective, there must be collaborative planning, instruction, assessments and reflection. It must be a trusting relationship that is honest, comfortable, and respectful of different teaching styles and and areas of expertise. The ultimate goal in this collaborative co-teaching model is that there is no distinction between the EL teacher and the general education teacher. Both should work with the entire class on the mastery of the content and language-acquisition objectives. -Erica Waters

In order for true co-teaching practices to take place and be beneficial, collaboration must occur. Both teachers should accept responsibility for all students within a classroom and work together to best meet the needs of each learner. Both teachers should bring to the table their area of expertise and utilize that when planning instruction and supportive resources. While there are different types of co-teaching models, all of them insist on collaborative planning, instruction and reflection in order for co-teaching practices to be highly effective. - Leia Bruton

Co-teaching is community based teaching strategy that benefits all students. Co-teaching is a must with so many services offered to students, teaching in isolation is practically nonexistent. The text explains that collaborative instruction must include collaboration in planning, assessment, and reflection. While there are many variations of co-teaching, a successful one will be a teaching community that has team norms, trust, respect, communication, and sharing of ideas. The text gives one example of effective collaboration that I believe is a great summary of the ingredients of successful co-teaching: conversation, collegiality, conflict, control, and celebration. -Jenn Tony
