Almost all of Benin's dependent population is young with a percentage of 42.3%, the other 1.8% is the 65+ population. The country that has the lowest dependent population is Greece with 26.5% of the population being dependent. Majority of Greece’s dependent percentage is older with a percentage of 23%, the other 13.5% is the younger population making a total of 26.5%. Canada’s dependent population is just about right in between these two countries with 35% of the population benign dependent.
Why is it there? Birth rate

Benin clearly has a very high birth rate, this could be due to higher fertility rates and being in demand for a higher working population. Benin having a lower life expectancy and a higher birth rate means that it is a very dynamic country. Canada and Greece have really similar birth rates and this is likely due to an impact on the growth rate. This could be as a result of a low fertility rate or not having the resources to care for the younger population. Women choosing not to have children also has an impact on birth rates. Women could not be having as many babies because of a living crisis and how high pricing is to live. With more equality to women, they have more opportunities for jobs and to work on their career, this can lead women to start having children in their mid 30s which only provides enough time to have 1-2 kids.

When countries like Canada and Greece have high life expectancies, it's usually as a result of having the resources like health care to keep the older population healthy. On the other hand, countries like Benin likely do not have the resources from the working population to provide for the senior population.

Why is it there? Dependency load

High dependency loads can be a result of the working age reproducing and increasing the birth rates and then declining the working population by later aging into seniors and increasing the older population. Benin is a country with a high dependency load. When countries have low dependency loads it's usually due to there being a higher working population. With a higher working population, there is a sufficient support system for the dependent population. Birth rates, fertility rates, and life expectancies also have major impacts. High birth rates, fertility rates, and life expectancies can be a major reason for a higher dependency load. If these factors are low, it's likely that there is a low dependency load. Canada and Greece are examples of countries with a low dependency load.
