How will you build a community of learners in the first 30 minutes?

Icebreaker : By greeting everyone warmly, and introduce yourself briefly to create a welcoming atmosphere. Next, run a quick icebreaker. A simple, inclusive activity like sharing “one word to describe how you feel today” in the chat or using a poll helps participants open up and feel connected from the start.

Establishing Shared Goals and Norms: Share the workshop objectives and invite participants to share any personal goals or expectations in the chat or through a virtual sticky note tool. Set ground rules for respectful communication and participation, which are essential in virtual settings. Encourage open-mindedness and value diverse perspectives, framing the workshop as a safe and collaborative space.

Setting up workshop Essential Agreements: Break participants into small groups in breakout rooms and have each person share what is important to have a great learning , what they hope to gain from the workshop. This helps build personal connections and a sense of belonging and also help set the tone. The participants come back to the main room to contribute to the whole group session agreements.

How will you identify and build on participants' prior knowledge throughout the workshop?

Begin with a Knowledge Check-in:
I will start the workshop with a poll or quick self-assessment using a virtual tool like Mentimeter or Padlet. This helps participants identify their current understanding while giving you a snapshot of their knowledge, which you can refer back to and build upon.

Live Annotations and Brainstorming Activities:
During the session, I will incorporate interactive activities where participants can annotate, share ideas, or respond to questions referring to their real time scenarios. For example, ask them to contribute to a shared sandbox to gather thoughts on key concepts. This keeps their prior knowledge visible and provides opportunities for peer-to-peer learning.

Reflective Recaps and Continuous Feedback Loops:
I will try checking in with participants through reflective prompts, polls, or chat responses throughout the session. Pose questions that ask them to relate new information to their own experiences or contexts, reinforcing connections to prior knowledge.

End-of-Session Reflection or Sharing:
I will conclude with a quick reflective activity, such as sharing one key takeaway or a “next step” they can apply in their work. This solidifies learning and allows participants to integrate new knowledge with what they already know.

How will you ensure a balance between facilitator- and participant-led inquiries and commentaries throughout the workshop?

Start with Participant-Centered Goals: By asking participants to share their expectations, goals, or areas of curiosity through a chat box. This helps ensure the workshop addresses specific participant interests and priorities, setting the stage for more participant-led inquiry.

Quick Surveys: I prefer to use virtual polling tools to gauge participants’ interests and prior knowledge on key topics throughout the session. This data allows you to pivot discussions based on participants' responses, maintaining a dynamic flow where participant voices drive some of the content focus.

Establish Inquiry Protocols: I will attempt to Introduce a structure for Q&A, like “I Notice, I Wonder” or “Think-Pair-Share.” This gives participants a chance to reflect and ask questions while allowing you to respond to their needs and curiosities, balancing the inquiry process.

Reflection and Recap Points: Regular pause for participant reflections or summary points, inviting them to share insights or comments in chat or on shared documents. These recap moments allow participants to voice their understanding, steering the next segment based on the inquiries that arise naturally.

Flexible Q&A Segments: I will allow time for a flexible Q&A at the end of each major section or topic, ensuring participants can address any questions or insights they want to explore further. Encourage them to connect this back to their professional experiences to keep it participant-driven.

Which virtual tools might you use to nurture reflection throughout the workshop, not just at the end of an inquiry?

Padlet and sandbox: This tool works well for capturing individual and group reflections. Set up different columns on a Padlet board for participants to add thoughts, questions, and takeaways during each segment, creating a timeline of reflections to return to throughout the session.

Google Forms or Poll Everywhere: Use these for brief, anonymous reflections and check-ins throughout the workshop. A few reflective questions in Google Forms or a Poll Everywhere survey with open-ended responses can prompt participants to consider how new information resonates with their experience or understanding at various points.

Mentimeter: This interactive polling tool allows for various formats, such as word clouds, open-ended questions, and ranking exercises. Use it to capture real-time reflections, allowing participants to see trends and common insights across the group.

Chat Box: The chat feature on most platforms can be highly effective for quick reflections, especially if participants are prompted to respond to targeted questions at certain points. These responses can be read aloud or summarized to weave participant reflections into the ongoing discussion.

Flip: This video-based tool enables participants to record brief video reflections. This can be especially useful for asynchronous or longer workshops, allowing participants to verbalize and share their reflections with the group in a more personal way. (I did not try this yet, but trying to master it)
