Precolonial Southeast Asia was not divided into countries and there were no political boundaries. Instead, it was a collection of states, ruled by chiefs or sultans.
Many Southeast Asians believed that the traditional rulers were divinely appointed to rule. They believed that their leaders were chosen by the gods they believed in. This way, the rulers were considered as “god who is walking on Earth”. All subjects must follow his command, and disobedience was considered as committing sin to God Himself. This belief was reflected in the titles used to address the rulers:
