Mainland Southeast Asia’s economic activity consisted mainly of traditional agriculture. The people do not need outside help in satisfying the basic needs especially in the production of food and using of the natural resources. People used the harvest to fulfill their daily needs (subsistence farming). Trading took place only when there were surpluses. The inland kingdoms of Indonesia, especially those of central and east Java and Bali, were known for their wealthy agrarian products.

Precolonial Southeast Asia was not divided into countries and there were no political boundaries. Instead, it was a collection of states, ruled by chiefs or sultans.

Many Southeast Asians believed that the traditional rulers were divinely appointed to rule. They believed that their leaders were chosen by the gods they believed in. This way, the rulers were considered as “god who is walking on Earth”. All subjects must follow his command, and disobedience was considered as committing sin to God Himself. This belief was reflected in the titles used to address the rulers:

Title

Yang di- Pertuan Besar (Malay Sultan)
Hamengku Buwono (Javanese kings)

Huang di (Vietnam)
Meaning
He who is made me lord

He who holds the world on his lap

Son of heaven
