I still remember being struck by the natural beauty of her smile. 


One of my fondest memories of Ellen is visiting her and Tom in Guam when I was living in Japan. We spent sun-soaked days hiking to secluded snorkeling spots during the day and enjoying beers while watching the sunset each evening. And while Tom showered to the Steve Miller Band blasting on the stereo, Ellen and I would engage in some intellectual conversation or another. I always appreciated the ready expanse of her knowledge and curiosity as well as her sense of humor and easy laugh.


One of my more recent memories of Ellen is a layered and continuous one. It’s the love and joy and pride that is both an anchor and a beam of light whenever she’s in the presence of each of her sons. She truly is an exceptional mother--compassuonate doctor, and accomplished runner, too!

We all went on a hike in the jungle to a waterfall, led by your dad of course (with his characteristic focus...). Your mom was like weeks from giving birth and not only did she do the entire hike without a single complaint, when we reached the waterfall, she plopped down on a big rock and exposed her giant belly (aka Nate) to the sun like a boss. We always thought that was pure badassery at the time, and even more so after we had kids of our own.

She’s like a sister to me. I am forever grateful my brother married her and brought her into our family. She’s so thoughtful and wise and fun. Adding her into our Schlueter family fold  really increased our overall quality and value😉. 
The majority of my memories with her involve two things: laughing (she’s funny in her own right and has an easy smile and laugh) and great conversations. Wherever I am with her, whatever we’re doing, I can always count on laughing and a great conversation.

You have been there for us in ways that cannot ever be underestimated. Without you, Henry probably would have gotten a lot sicker and GT and Sammy wouldn’t have felt so safe and loved while we cared for him. The way you knew exactly what to do from a doctor’s perspective will always amaze us, but the way you dropped everything to be there for us will forever touch us. We love you, Ellen! Happy birthday. 

P.S. We need another fun girls afternoon like we did that day after Ragbrai down by the river.
