At the start of quarantine it was rough. Out of nowhere everything started getting cancelled. Junior Olympics was cancelled the day before it was going to start and the following day the school informed us we were going online for the rest of the year. Practice was oddly closed when we were informed we had to get out of the pool in the middle practice with no wanting beforehand by the school that the team was training at. It was like this for 5 horrific months but then practice opened in August, and swimming wise, everything back to normal but then we were told parents couldn’t attend meets. In school I stayed online until I got COVID-19 and felt comfortable coming back to actual school. Life right now is relatively close to normal at this point other than the mask but I can manage. I am also not worried about being infected by COVID because I have antibodies.

This is why I am a strong believer in what the Yin-Yang stands for: If there is good there is bad and Vice versa and there a little good in bad and Vice versa. Although COVID was one of the worst things to happen to anyone, there were still positives. I was able to stay home and spend time with family. It allowed me to focus on myself and relax for a bit, and showed me to appreciate everything I have including my family, the opportunities I am given and many more things. I also realized how important it is to take care of oneself. Maybe if I was not an athlete, I would have not been A-symptomatic and experienced COVID terribly. It was another great experience that swimming has given me and this picture was a picture with the relay (I am on far right). I decided to do a Q&A with my father, but tried not to discuss COVID and keep a joyful mood.
Q: What did you want to be when you were older?
A: I wanted to be a pilot, but I did not have the resources to go to school and leaned towards the field of mechanics and engineering.
Q: Did you go to college?
A: No I did not go to college because I did not have my father or mother to guide me in the correct path. I dropped out of high school to maintain my self, but still was get back on track. This is why I want you, Alessandro, to have an easier life then what I had and I want you to be who ever you want and learn.
Q: When was the last time you went to Cuba?
 A: The last time I went to visit my home country was in 1999 to visit my grandma. She took care of me when I was your age and I love her to death even though she is in a better place now. 
Q: How are my grades right now and how am I doing in swimming?

When COVID first came out in China, I thought, ‘That won’t cross to the United States.” After when there was a case in America, I believed, “That won’t cause too much harm,” but then lockdown came. Everyone was forced to stay home and many activities were cancelled and businesses shut down. Jobs were being lost and people were getting infected. I personally believe that the first couple months there was no over-reaction because it was very new and no one clearly understood the virus. Although it spreads quickly, I think people right now are over-reacting. At this point, many people are either vaccinated or have antibodies, and there should not be the stress of carrying a mask or have to wait more to sit at a table in a restaurant because there is limited seating. There should be complete normality at this point but the government has become way too political on the subject of this virus.
