Some people might think that final exam is an effective way to test a student. Students just need to finish a test paper in the end of the class, and they do not need to spend a lot of time on other assignments such as presentation or group work. Therefore, students will have less study pressure. However, it is evident that continuous assessment can judge all aspects of students, not just the exam performance. For example, some students who usually perform excellent in class may be worried about the final exam since they cannot get a good score under the intense pressure of exam enviornment. It also gives teachers more flexible ways to judge students’ abilities such as understanding and communication. Students who have physical problems do not need to take exams and they can choose a better way to prove their study abilities. In addition, teachers can change teaching methods according to different students, which is good for students to make progress in study. In conclusion, continuous assessment should be extended in today‘s schools.

It has often been observed that a student is good at math and can get good grades in an exam, but he often does not finish his homework on time and even absent many classes. If only using an exam to evaluate the student's ability, it may test the student's math ability but can't detect the student's learning.
Nevertheless, it could be argued that exam is a fair way to judge a students' abilities with less time-consuming and students need to prepare less evaluation assignments.

Continuous assessment is a fairer way to judge a student's ability than exams.

It has often been believed that setting final exams for students is quite a more efficient approach to judge students’ academic ability for its less time-consuming feature compared with continuous assessment. More importantly, it allows students to be much more independent on making personal schedule, as well as selecting suitable learning methods.

This may be true to some of the students with self-control, who can follow their previous plans. However, for a majority of students, they are likely to waste their time on other things and simply try to memorize some knowledge one or two weeks before the examination.

Taking continuous assessment as a regard of students’ ability actually shows a sense of responsibility from school and staff members since they are willing to spend more time on students’ daily study states and give more timely feedback. As a result, students will feel they have been given more attention and will be inspired to study harder during the course since their performance has been monitored. It is the continuous hardworking that leads to the improvement of students’ academic ability and it is quite obvious that academic ability is not only about memorizing.

In conclusion, though it could take more time to judge students’ academic ability with continuous assessment, it is still a fairer and more useful way to most of the students.

It may be suggest that exams may quantify students’ knowledge accurately and reflect their weakness clearly within a limited time, since most exams have specific standard and criteria of marking and evaluation. Despite this claim, there is significant evidence to suggest that continuous assessment is able to measure what degree a student master the concepts, principles and knowledge in a boarder vision. With this, students are encouraged to exhibit their progress and all various of abilities, such as communication, problem-solving as well as brain-mouth coordination, during the courses, instead of merely memory and writing skills in conventional exams. Therefore, it not only enable students to recognize their strengths and drawbacks of what they learned throughout the whole process of courses, but also allow them to secure a further improvement at the final.

It can reduce the time required, without long-term feedback, and detect the accuracy of the learning knowledge in an effective time, reducing the evaluation difference caused by the assessment. Despite this claim, it is evidence that continuous assessment is not only to examine the mastery of knowledge, but to ensure that students are in a state of continuous learning and maintain a correct attitude towards learning.
